renner 19 cold-start goodliness

reggie the renner has is suffering  typical frenchness with his attitude to cold starting

its a 92 1.4 RNi with GM single port injection

it seems there is no enrichment happening with a cold engine

i have heard the idle control valve moving the other day so this seems in order

so fellow autoshiters, what is the likely culprit? it does seem to have 2 temp sensors on block is one for auto-choke?

it would be really nice if i could take less than 5 mins churning the little sod over when i want to go for a wallow over birminghamshires finest chod road surfaces!

any ideas??

If it's anything like mine (one sensor is for the temperature gauge on the dash, the other the fuel computer uses to determine the temperature of the coolant. Someone who knows the 1.4 better than I will be along shortly to tell you which one's which)- the sensors go "soft" with age, not making the high resistance they should when they are cold.

Net result, computer makes fuel calculations for the engine being much warmer than it actually is, injects less fuel so you don't get the "choke" effect and makes it a pain to start. Once the compression has warmed the cylinders a little after cranking forever it'll run.. so that sounds like the most likely culprit.

Cheap (they can get stuck in fairly tight so sometimes not 100% easy) to replace. I think Renault still carry them, the about twenty quid at last check. Other reputable places have them also.

Try unplugging the sensor that is for fuel and do a cold start. Not saying it would work on this but some SPi engines I've had before will automatically drop into a cold start mode and start, and once warm, can be reconnected. It would narrow it down if that's the cause

Mrs fordpervs dads mk3 astray had a similar problem but that overfuelled like a bitch with it and I narrowed it down to the temp sensor for the Ecu by unplugging it and it ran smooth without it being plugged in, I'm guessing it's the same spi that's on your renner, on that iirc it was a yellow rectangular 2 pin plug which was down at the back of the manifold.

on the 1.4 energy the are 2 sensors in the block above the gearbox so i'll have to roll up my sleeves and start randomly pulling wires off lol

spose i shouldnt moan too much had it 4 years and it only cost 100 sovs :-D

stepper motor seems to be working as i heard it returning to its rest position after i switched engine off the other day- that and the idle does seem to correct itself as needed

the stepper motor is one that is hard to find as the two i did buy dont quite have the same bolt hole pattern and the wiring plug is different angle

yay disconnect wire and we have cold start only problem is its OMGHARDTOREACHPLACE to get socket on!

of course what i don't get is, now that i disconnected the temp sensor the car runs properly, cold start works and the idle goes down when engine warms up??

if it don't need the extra sensor it why is it there?? maybe he just showing off cos i give him a new mirror glass

bliddy frogs!

might treat the bumpers to to the linseed method just so he can strut his stuff a bit! lol

Because it takes a Best Guess based upon various other aspects of the engine's running.

Usually that guess is within reasonable accuracy, but you'll find the emissions go way out the window as it screws about with the mixture to get the idle somewhere near a sane value.
