Subaru Justy ECVT - Opinions

These things rot like nobodys business. A shame because they are ace in snow.

Ecvt is fine when it works. If it breaks i think the chances of finding anyone who can fix it are zero. If cheap and working worth a punt.

It´s got a transmission almost identical to the old DAF-ones, so fixing is not such a huge problem for a specialist.

Rust is the main problem, the engines never die if there is oil and water in them and the transmission (+4WD) lasts quite long too if used properly.

It´s a bit like an old DAF with 4WD and the quirkyness of a small japanese car.

Great cars, missed my many.

[Warning : This post may contain high levels of pedantry !]

That's a bit of an over-generalisation, really. The ECVT transmission works on the same principle as DAFs (or, in fact, most scooters) as it has a belt and two variable-diameter pulleys. But the whole unit is enclosed, the belt is steel rather than rubber and the pulley diameter is controlled electronically by means of a weird magnetic clutch. Oh, and IIRC you can't go as fast in reverse as forwards because reverse gear doesn't go through the pulleys !

If something goes wrong, I would expect parts availability to be an issue and due to the rarity and relevant complexity of the transmission there may not be many specialists out there who could rebuild it.

I have one, is this a 1000cc?

If it's running badly, it'll be the carb, they're notoriously crap.

N reg seems a bit late? They were only made until 91/92.

All UK models are 1.2s. It won't be carb'd because post-93 models are injected.

They were in production until 1995, I owned a 1996 registered N reg one.
