95 Rover 416

My daily driver. And on the way back from the tip this afternoon the clutch decided to give up.. So I'm thinking...is it worth doing? Or time to weigh it in and get something for 300-500ish? Bearing in mind it'll need 4 tyres shortly for its ticket.Hmm...Stan

Depends how handy you are with the spanners - you could probably score a full clutch kit on eBay for a tenner or twenty quid, and I've just offloaded 4 legal steel wheels with tyres on Freecycle (not Rover fitment mind!), so I'm sure others might do the same...alternatively, steel wheels tend to go for little on eBay again. If you like the 400 then I'm sure a decent 420D could be got within budget.

It's a hatch with the Rover K. Had it from new as a company car.Had the renowned HG failure in 2000 and (what appears to have been) a good 2nd hand head fitted then. Rest of the car isn't too ropey..bit of bubbly stuff in places. Reluctant to spend too much on it..and just had an offer of a 620 with Honda engine at £395ish. 76k with cambelt done at 60k and 9 months ticket. It's an auto though.

I've had a couple of those 400s, a 416i like yours, and a 420Di. The 600 feels like quite a big car to drive and isn't nearly as nimble as the 400. Slightly nicer interior though. The Honda 2.0 is a great motor, very smooth for a 4-cyl but not the most economical thing in the world, especially coupled with a slusher. My mum's 2.0 Accords only managed early 30s MPG and they were both manual.

Said like a bad thing? What's the down side of them bearing in mind I've never driven or owned an auto? Got my eye on an old Audi auto at the moment as my 'first ever auto', should I wait for a manual? :? (sorry for the hijack...)

Sure they're fine MrRR. It's just..like you..I've never been the proud possessor of an auto either.Been almost blinded many times by them though while waiting behind them at lights..foot remorselessly jammed on the brake pedal.

i had a Rover 418 Tourer was a great car, never let me down, until the cam snapped in three places in the middle of no-where, 3ft of snow everywhere, heavy pregant misses next to me, never brought another...

yep Peugeot lump :?:? was offered a replacement for 100e but lost motivation with it..then it got broken into, crowbarred the bonnet open 5even though all the doors were open, bent all the bonnet bumper and one wing...

Those 400 tourers look really smart, I'd quite like to own one - it'd have to be a 2.0 petrol though.

I'd be tempted to launch it tbh, but I've seen two 400 series Rovers off recently so would say that. What sized tyres are they? No promises but might have at least two here with loads of tread which you can have for nowt if it would help?

That's good of you..it's sitting across the road at the mo in disgrace..but from memory 185/60 x 14. TBH though..like you I'm coming to the conclusion its had its day. I'll sleep on it.Cheers,Stan

Tricky decision. If you've been the sole driver from new then you'll know the car inside out, and that counts for a lot. Tyres will be no bother, it's the clutch that's the tricky bit. Bubbly stuff can be kept at bay with Waxoyl, never seen a terminally-corroded 400 yet.623i sounds like a good'un, wouldn't be worried about the autobox as it's a Honda unit and therefore robust, but they aren't hugely economical. You pays yer money and you takes yer etc.

I loved my 623, smoothest 4-cyl engine evar. It was genuinely difficult to tell how many cylinders it had.

They are no less economical than the 620 either, but have nearly 30 more bhp.

Been a decent motor has the 416..but it'll also need a cambelt in the next year..so I'm swaying away from it.. Best price I've seen on the bay for a clutch kit is around £50..fair bit of spanner work involved too. And there's still stuff to do on the P6... The 600 I have on offer is the 2 litre Honda tho..not the 2.3 (I wish). Might be a tad too laggardly.... Hmmm....

Posted

2-litre auto is not rapid (I had the same combo in the later Accord shape) and will struggle to crack 30mpg in the daily grind...but it will run all day long until the End of Time.If that 620 doesn't have any rust around the rear arch where it meets the back bumper, it's a goodun and worth the money...

Must admit, I'd take a 600 over a 400 anyday.But if you're updating Rovers, why not jump a generation and not get a 75?

Posted

Yeah, could have a thing for 75's, but the budget's £600 tops..credit crunch and all that.

CRUSH

Crush it is I reckon Mr B, and going for the 600. Seems tidy enough, worst bit is the OSF wing that's had a dent pulled out and rattle canned.

Ticket till July, tax end of Jan, £395ish. And doing around 5k miles a year in it will cost about a fiver a week more than the 416 I reckon.

You're welcome if passing. It's already (virtually) had the BF treatment

Deal done on the 620...picking it up at the weekend. :D So the 416 is now available for target practice.Cheers for all the replies chaps.Stan

Good result Stan, 620 looks very decent for the money!

Posted

Yep..sincerely hope so!Taking the P6B for a tootle down to Essex on Saturday to pick up. And with petrol now at 99.9p the day shouldn't cost me any more than 20% of the 620 price... Result!
