FAO MOT testers

I have the opportunity to buy an up and running established MOT centre. For the moment the A.E. will be staying on.Now as I am not a nominated tester I will be going on a course.I will be sponsored by the test station.Don't know if the MOT testers out there can answer my question but here goes.

Many years ago I only passed my first and second year city and guilds apprenticeship course and failed my final year.Would this be enough to take the three day course or do I need to take the training assessment exam first ?

You need a proper cng certificate , they dont accept end of year credits iirc. The pre exam is supposed to be a cock too. I've known some really switched on techs fail it .

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings .I looked into it cos I couldn't find my cert and cng had no record of it. Started to panic but brother found my cert at his house.

A friend of mine did the assessment exam a few years ago. He got 89% and needed 91% to pass.He also said the exam was cock too.

Was hoping to not have to do the pre exam first, but hey.

I'm going down the MOT station on Thursday as the "shaker and braker" for the day so will ask their advice.

I've got the exam in 2 days, haven't revised yet as I didn't think it would be too difficult but a bit of googling says otherwise.

I've got cng's from 20 years ago but couldn't find them so thought I'd just sit the exam

Maybe I should have got reprints.....

I had to do the NTTA assessment exam as my apprenticeship was actually in Light Vehicle Body Repair. None of the garages I worked in after that sent me for courses or training so have no formal mechanics qualifications. I still have the certificate (it was about 15 years ago) 98%. I got 1 bloody question wrong. I do remember the questions asking about Ackerman angles and electrical principles. No idea what that's got to do with tooting horns and booting Diesels to get them through emissions...

I've just booked my refresher course for next month- have to go to Glasgow now as Edinburgh has closed. I've run out of time for my bike certificate now though, would have to start again from scratch. :(

Just passed my exam, multiple choice,60 questions with 4 possible answers.

I got 49/60 so had 82% pass which I thought was a bit low, but pass rate is 75%

As I work mainly on old stuff, I wasn't good with diesel or catalytic converter questions.

If you fail, you can't re-take it within 4 months, fail a second time and you have to wait 4 years

Thank you, don't know if I'll find out what I got wrong or not.

Already got my smart card and a two days scheduled to do the "mot managers course" at the end of feb.

As I understand it, the exam pass will then generate a booking for a 3 day practical course with proper fiddling with cars.

Meanwhile I've got to dig a bfo hole in my workshop floor and sink the brake rollers in,put my new ramp up and build a little viewing area and a few other bits, don't know how long it's meant to take but to vosa's credit they are very well organised and I bet there will be a letter from them in tomorrow's post.
