V 890 SOR (n)

Ok all you wise men,  I have a re-curring yearly problem, sort of, with DVLA.....

I am responsible for a vehicle, which has been on sorn for a long time, but it is not in my name,

and to make things more complex, the reminder each year goes to a relative's old address,

and there is now no trace of the V5 ©  - it has been either misplaced, or lost during the move.

I called  DVLA at some stage, who insist I must get the owner to either pay £25 for a new V5C,

or if "sold' to me, I must pay -  problem is, he is overseas!!

so I found a way round this for the last few times, by using FORM V890, kindly given to me by

one of the local licencing offices (which has since closed....).

Now, whenever I ask for a V890, ANYWHERE, I am grilled, "why do I want one on those, they are

discontinued..."  ....  same reply at the post offices I have tried.... :-(

Then, LO & BEHOLD,  google same form, and they are available online !!!     Bingo.

- but this does not make sense, surely ?

so it seems they still accept a V890, which does not show the long string of digits from the V5C,

 -    any ideas, anyone ?   this info may be of use to others on here, hopefully,   cheers!  :-D

further to this - copied /pasted - this explains why post offices do not have the forms now !

You can download the SORN form from the DVLA website as Form Online V890, complete it and send it to DVLA Swansea. Please note, your local licence-issuing Post Office cannot accept a SORN on Form Online V890! Do keep a copy with your car's documents so you have a record of having submitted a SORN.

The V890 can be used to SORN a vehicle you've just bought (if you don't like doovlah bum-raping, you must do this, even if the last owner has a current SORN, SORN is not transferred automatically.)

If I were you, I wouldn't bother with the V5 paper, just complete this form with all your own details, tick the box:

"[ ] The V5C has already been submitted to register the vehicle in my name"

Then about a month later ring them up and say "I bought the car on [date 1 day before the SORN date], but I haven't received my V5 yet"

Maybe the old owner didn't send it off or whatever... tell them you made the SORN, they should send you a V5 or tell you how to get it - YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY.

Krujoe - thanks for the tip !

I bet they'd just say they haven't received, it so you'll still get charged £25 and the previous owner will cop a fine for failing to inform the twats they have sold the vehicle.

Use the form Chris -it'll be the last time its needed. I've a load of spare paper ones -if needed

SORN goes 'one off' from 16th December. No more annual renewals, thereafter.

They might argue the toss and try it on, but they can't prove that anyone did anything wrong, so should let you have it. Usually they're happy enough if you approach them with information on a situation before they start sending out letters and fines an ting.

This is a strange one. You are reponsible for a vehicle that's not in your name, why bother then let who ever is the named owner sort it as its the keeper responsability to keep the vehicle legal.

Krujoe I'm sure the Free v5 only aplies if you have the green slip from the last registered owner.

Posted

You shouldn't need the green slip if you tell them you believe that the previous owner sent off the V5 for transfer of ownership.

Posted

Hmm well I have never been lucky enough to get a free v5 they just bummed me for 25 squid because I never had the green slip.

Posted

We obviously have differing experiences, but I say if you get in quick enough, they'll be glad you made contact and will let you have it if you're persistent.

And you can tell them you want to keep the green slip in case you want to tax it soon.

If you don't like the first answer you get, you could ring up again and get a different one! :D

ABSOLUTELY  FFFING  BRILLIANT !!!!!   Thanks Nigel, 8)   I knew I had heard of that somewhere in the recent past, but no-one

I asked could confirm it.   You are the font of all tat knowledge and should be Knighted  -  cheers !

Tayne  -  how very subtle,  nice one.... V8, "90"  .....    (& I hope this thread has IMProved 4u.....)

(I wonder how many DVLA staff read this thread..?  I am lothe to give further details out as it's a public forum,

otherwise i'd explain to Garbaldy the "odd situation" more fully  - but you can possibly guess)
