Bolt wont grip - Scenic Coil Pack

Recommended Posts

The Wife's Scenic has started juddering, almost like its running on 3.5 cylinders. Not all the while and normally at slower speeds. As its an Auto its making life interesting to say the least.

Had a quick look last night and noticed the bolt holding coil pack three is not tight, so wondered if that might be what;s causing the issue.

Trying to sort another bolt, but wondered if I could pack the bolt with anything to get a tighter fit.

Was thinking plumbers PTFE tape, but wondered if this was a good idea or not.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers

It won't help being lose but these are very unreliable parts so it could probably do with a new coil. A code reader should tell you which one is playing up. Good old renaults it could be worse though could be a dci !!

haha very true! If the bolt gets tight at all (even if it spins) and the coil pack is ok, give the bolt and the hole a clean with a degreaser and try using some Loctite thread lock over night.

Did find that but was not sure if I'd be able to undo the bolt at a later date if needed. Or is that JB Weld  :-D

I bought WarrenTClaim a second hand coil pack for his Scenic and it still ran like it was missing?

Hammer a smaller socket over it. Sorted.

And Bob's yer uncle.

On those Renault's if they have a miss fire you can't diagnose them like you would an old car by disconnecting each one in turn. Due to the way they are wired up it will look like you have 2 failed coils. You need to either read the codes and remember some French cars number the cylinders from the flywheel end. Or UN bolt the square alloy cover from the front of the engine and disconnect the injectors one at a time to find the poorly cylinder.

Sorry to teach granny etc etc.

Thanks for all the advice, pretty sure its cylinder number 3 due to taking leads off as above. However its not a total misfire, hence why I thought the coil pack may not be fully "home" and noticed that the bolt was not tight.

Appears to be a 5mm gap between the base of the coil and the engine block.

Looking to get the coil pack flush with the block (via a new bolt or thread lock) before I start getting new coil packs etc.

Thanks again for al the help, will report back.

Cheers

it should push home with out pulling it in . is the rubber seal missing from the top of the coil pack?

Or a bit of an old coil still stuck on the plug or in the tube?

Or a wrong plug / loose
