Discovery seat diaphragm repair

Split seat diaphragms are a common Discovery ailment. Original LR parts are unobtainium, although pattern parts are available from a few places for about £25 plus P&P.

That seemed expensive for what it was, so I passed my split diaphragm to my mate Mick (who some of you may have met at Shitefest '13), his company makes filters & other stuff for heavy industry.

The result: one repaired seat diaphragm :-)

First impressions are excellent - the diaphragm fitted beautifully, the seat's back to how it should be. Which is a good thing, as most of the bubble wrap I was using to pad out the seat at Shitefest had burst...

I'll be testing the durability of the repair with a trip to the Alps in January :-)

Excellent work there mick & john (aren't they the fellers behind 'modern toss')? More modern car seats seem to last indefinitely but back in the day i did loads of miles in old shite with half-collapsed seats, it seemed to be one of those problems that just came with a car and would have to be tolerated or if extreme, 'repaired' with some additional patterned cushions. I probably wouldn't have the dire posture and back pain i have now, if i'd bothered fixing them properly like this.

Yeah, I can verify that a collapsed seat base is not good for your back - the last 1,000 miles or so on bubble wrap and / or the seat rails (once the bubbles had bust) plays merry havoc with your posture.

On a broader note - if this repair lasts well (i.e. survives the next couple of months & the Austria trip), Mick might be persuadable to do seat diaphragm repairs for other folks if required.

That looks well done !

Much better than what the previous owner of my old Allegro had done : he had taken the diaphragm out and replaced it with a thin sheet of MDF ! I never bothered fixing it properly, as it suited the general misery of the car and it was still more comfortable than modern VAG seats

I can also confirm a collapsed Discovery seat base is not good for your back.

Swapping it with the passenger side and giving the passenger a big cushion helps though.

Will be interesting to see how well it lasts
