seacow Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Never used it before but it was on offer at Tesco for £2 so thought screw it why not! So have I : a) pulled a stroke of genius - the Montego will now out perform everything and return 100MPG just wasted £2 that I could have bought a new and improved lottery ticketc) totally fucked the car and should wait for the loud bang any second now? PS - I have actually added to said car as I filled up on way out of store!!
saucedoctor Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 In my experience, Redex is good stuff. I've used it for years, especially on gummed up carburettors. I've used it on engines that haven't run for a long time by putting it down the bores and leaving it overnight as well.. FWIW I reckon it's good stuff, unlike a lot of the snake oil that's about these days.
fordperv Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 redex used to be gr9, i cant comment on how good it is now though as most old school things have become crap
beko1987 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I normally run it through when I first buy a car just in case, but I find putting a tank of premium expensive petrol works the same and increases mpg. However I normally fill up at asda, who don't do premium lex, so it's rare that happens!
I_am_Diesel Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I sometimes use it when I have run out of Skol Super Strength
overrun Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I run my car on any old shite. I have 60L of year-old V Power premix sitting there that I cannot abide throwing away.
Spiny Norman Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 In my experience it's worth using on older engines with carbs but I've never been able to convince myself it's worth the effort in a modern injected car. I remember the first time I ever used it, not long after I'd passed my test, in my old Audi 80 (the one that looked like a booted Mk1 Passat), and I did it totally by the instructions on the label. I'd bought a new set of plugs and air filter too so I took the car for a run to warm it up, then dribbled some through the carb while revving it up which produced 'some' smoke, then I took the plugs out and put some in each cylinder and put the plugs in finger tight and turned it on the starter for a few seconds. Then I went and had my tea. I went back an hour or so later, took the plugs out and spun it on the starter while my Dad held a towel over the plug holes to get most of it out. I put the new plugs in it, and started it up.The street behind the car started to disappear in a haze of red smoke, James Bond couldn't have done a better smoke screen. It was so bad I thought I'd broken something but after a minute or so it started to clear up enough to see all the neighbours at their windows wondering what was on fire. I took it for a run and I've never felt an improvement like it. It was like the car had another 20bhp, but sadly I've never achieved the same effect in any car since. Shep Shepherd and brickwall 2
UmBongo Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I use it before MOTs because I was told it helped improve exhaust emissions.
D-Dubya Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I've used it on SPi engines when the injector fouls up. never used it on MPi engines
Station Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Will try it on my Justy, which is running like poo.
Brent_Crude Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 At £2 I don't think you can go too wrong. It is normally £5-£6 saucedoctor 1
Sigmund Fraud Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 If you check the MSDS, you will realise that Redex is mostly naphtha ! I find it hard to believe that 250ml of Zippo oil in a 45l tank of petrol will magically clean my injectors. £2 is not much, but a cheap ultrasonic cleaner is around £20 and you can also use it to appease SWMBO by cleaning her jewellery !
Junkman Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I always pour such stuff into the tank under the second new moon in November at the crossroads where the Three Weird Sisters once gathered to double toil and trouble. At the same time I throw a few Voodoo bones for good measure. brickwall 1

doug Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I use it every time Tesco has it on offer. For the next couple of tank fulls the MPG goes up but soon returns to normal MPG after that.
brickwall Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I have a bottle in the garage; looks like it should be poured over ice-cream. Joey spud, saucedoctor and Junkman 3
Joey spud Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I recently had a Merc 190 diesel that the guy had tossed a whole bottle into half a tank of fuel and all it did to that was lossen black stringy bits from wherever and blocked the fuel filter. Can't hurt i guess on a petrol motor but i wouldn't use it on a leggy Diesel..
brickwall Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I found a "splash" does the trick, but at the end of the day who knows?
