Exporting 124s

Since Mercedes 124s, "the last of the really well-made Mercs", always seem to reach well over bridge price on ebail, where/whom are they exported to? Are they broken for bits/converted to lhd in one of Poland's factories or do they just amble in a middle-class German way down to North Africa?

My latest is so shite that I'm thinking of doing the dirty on it.

Yup, africa, and not just north. they love 'em.  Morocco is a popular destination for old diesel pugs, too

Yup, there are 2 fields and a farm full of them up here- roof's get cut off, turned upside down and 4 get stuffed in a shipping container. Was a spate of thefts of 190's and especially W124's for a while, but seem to have died down again. When I had my 200E and 190D up the drive I was forever getting knocks on the door asking if they were for sale by shifty looking guys with a monobrow and a flatbed.

Mine went to Lithuania, already sold on for 2500 Euros. I still have the exporters phone number if that helps.

They don't even have to be really well made. I sold a piece of shit 400,000 mile W211 diesel to a Lithuanian who loaded it straight on a trailer behind his million kilometre Sprinter last summer. Wish I could find one them every month!

Heck. If I made a bit more money than I do atm it'd be desperate - as it is it's quite farcical.

So you're suggesting that a holiday to the Baltic States would more than pay its way? Fortunately I run on veg so getting anywhere in the world is a political and paperwork headache, rather than financial problem.

I venture onto an Indian car forum every now and then and it seems they're worth quite a bit in Inida. But they tend to like chrome and shiny stuff a bit too much to appreciate this latest turd.

Mine was a petrol so I'm not sure what the market for dizzlers is over there, in Eastern Europe petrols seem to be wanted more than diesels for some reason, an exporter even bought the 4.4 litre E61 Touring off me and it's now being used to haul drugs and firearms around Moscow.

I've shifted a couple of petrol Pug 406s to Zimbabwe, although they have to have a silver rocker cover 1.8 or 2 litre engine. That exporter also buys large engined BMWs but they have to be manual. Civil servants end up with the 406s and Mugabe henchmen love six cylinder BMW 5 and 7 series cos parts are available in South Africa.

Too cold for diesel in winter. Or not easy enough to make a bomb out of.

Remember seeing a photo somewhere of a load of W124 front ends. Effectively a wheelbarrow so the engine can be exported. Quite eery,

There must be over 100 of them in Addacabin's old yard at Mitchelston too.

Yup, plenty old Jeeps, Carina's and Avensis too- even the odd Alfa 156 and Fiat Coupe. No wonder we can't get any decent cheap autoshite up here. Is Nobles new yard open yet?

I had a 300te-24 full sportline that was rotten but packed with extras, i chap bought it and took it to germany where he breaks them to feed the growing 'youngtimer' scene over there
