ALMOST! Extinct Cars

The Amphicar was a 1960's German idea for a vehicle that could also be used on water. The builders probably, being car people, didn't realise what salt water does to thin sheet steel and ventilated box sections. So they are as rare as hens teeth in a haystack but this one is currently for sale on Car and Classic. Most are either in the USA or Germany. The only one I can remember seeing was a German plated one at a Spanish holiday resort. Does anyone know if there are any in the UK?

The Amphicar was the brainchild of one single person, Dr. Ing. Hans Trippel, who was an eccentric obsessed with the idea of designing amphibious vehicles.

It was his final attempt, he gave up on the idea altogether afterweards.

However, he managed to convince the Quandt Group to produce about 4000 units between 1961 and 1965, which makes the Amphicar the most successful amphibious vehicle for civilian use to date.

Exactly 99 were converted (!) to RHD and officially sold in the UK commencing 1964, but a lot more were imported either new or secondhand.

The survival rate globally is surprisingly high considering what the cars were intended for.

The Amphicar is far away from being an endangered species, be it in the UK or selsewhere.

I still regret that I didn't buy the ex Leyland Press car that was knocking about in Hampshire 6-7 years ago as a rolling resto.

Lost track of it and have never seen another one since, let alone one offered for sale.
