'Zuke woes - K-Series impression

A friend of mine rolled her Hyundai Coupe into a field quite dramatically last week. Incredibly lucky that her and her passenger walked away. Sadly, she rushed out and bought a Vitara 16v as a much-needed emergency replacement. This appears to have suffered rather serious HGF.

Anyone done a head gasket on these? There's talk of just getting another engine, but they seem to retail for the same sort of money she paid for the entire vehicle - she doesn't have that sort of money. Or should I consider lobbing in a tin of K-Seal as I do actually happen to have one?

What worries me is that they can apparently crack heads, which you're not likely to discover until you've got the thing in pieces.

May go and rescue it with the Land Rover later.

Hmmm. Apparently there's water pouring into the manifold and it no longer runs. Not healthy. Time to search for a new engine methinks.

Please get that pile of shit into your yard, run it up and report the exact symptoms here.

I really don't want to start a battle of the sexes here, but so far I bet you anything she didn't even check the coolant level yet.

A mechanically-minded pal of mine had a look at it last night. I'm off on hols for a few days, so I shall report back with any news next week. It's known that the car had overheated fairly recently and had then only been used for short distance trips until my friend bought it and drove it from Newport to Aberystwyth last night. My suspicion is that the head gasket was already mildly goosed. She's managed to get £100 back from the seller, so it's still cheap at £350 with 12 months MOT!
