Citroen XSZARA FOR SALE

Hi I sell cheap cars for a living and the best place for this is Auto trader. Ebay is just a waste of time now with the same cars relisted for weeks on end, Gumtree is full of numptys that what cars for scrap money. The last Xszara Hdi I sold on Autotrader was a 02 plate one in the same colour as yours 155k with some dents etc went for £700 in less than a week. There not always easy cars to sell but get it really clean and someone that's not really into cars will by it as its a cheap diesel. Private sellers adds are only about a tenner us traders have to pay £16 for under a grand adds.

Probably worth a whirl on Autotrader, but I'm not convinced about the argument. There's enough sensible folk reading ebay to appreciate a decently described car, and I've always found a "Buy It Now with best offer" format can work well, especially if the price is sensible. The auction format seems to bring out the worst in people.

Funnily enough the X plate counts against this one (must be a very early facelift), a Y would save £85 on road tax. If it was an auto, would have been more than tempted.

Personally speaking I find Classified ads on ebay are the way forwards, a nicely described advert with clear photos seems to get any potential customers more interested and it's a lot cheaper then Autotrader, something like £15 for 28 days.

I've sold a few cars like this and never had and problems with being messed around.

I'm no authority on flogging cars but to my mind Autotrader is the medium for folk who want to haggle and Ebay is the place for those who don't. What I mean is, if you advertise on AT at £795 you will have people coming to have a look, expecting to pay no more than £725 and hoping for less... The same ad on Ebay will be ignored by anyone with less than £750 in their back pocket.

Because I'm an unsociable sod, I don't really want people coming poking round and bartering me down, so I've always listed stuff at a very low start, and without reserve, but with a comprehensive description. Without fail, I've always had two or three bidders trying to snipe in the last seconds and got a reasonable price as a result. Always sight-unseen. I don't over-value things in my head so I don't mind that I haven't quite got the price I could have got if I'd paid for eighteen week's worth of Autotrader ads and endured numerous tyre-kickers come and go empty-handed when I won't budge on the price.

I agree with Cavette, I think the classified price is a mental stumbling block, but then I think a reserve is as well. Why pay Ebay extra to set a reserve when you can just get a mate to chuck in a bid close to what your reserve would be? Yes, I know it's illegal, against Ebay policy, yadda yadda, I'm not really talking about shilling, just an emergency measure in case it looks like it's going to go for fifty quid or summert!

The only problem with that is, in eBay's eyes the thing is SOLD if you do that so you get bummed for a final value fee. OK if its your mate you can get him to say the sale didnt go through and they will refund it after a fashion, but if you do that more than a couple of times you're likely to get your account hammered.

Also, I have NEVER managed to sell a car without getting bartered, even if you write NO MUTHA F**KING OFFERS on the ad, so I just accept that i'm gonna get a bit of that and put up with it.

Sorry, but as someone who buys cars via eBay auctions, what you are suggesting is just plain chuffing wrong. If I''m the only one prepared to bid on a car or win it at a knockdown price I shouldn't have to be competing with the fuggin' seller.

If there's a minimum "acceptable" price, either set a reserve or start the auction at that value. It IS shilling, it is against the rules and it right boils my piss

With a classified listing on ebay it is just that, a normal advert on ebay with plenty of people viewing the advert with no opition of some numpty bidding on it and winning it, I say stick it on for £850, which is still more then fair for the car, and expect to get haggled to £750.

I've got it on eBay as a classified already, its been on 10 days at 795 and i've had a grand total of 2 enquirys and 0 viewings!

Yeah, I know it's contentious. I've bought and sold my last few cars on Ebay and I've never had to do it. But from a buyer's perspective there's really not much practical difference than being up against a reserve. You still don't know what the reserve is, so it encourages you to increase your bid to meet it. And you've got to be aware that no-one in their right mind is going to let something go for vastly less than it's worth so the seller's always going to cover their arse whether they pull the auction, chuck in a shill bid, or simply refuse to complete the sale. You're always competing with the seller whether you're bidding blind on Ebay or stood face-to-face haggling.

Well, I had a couple of calls today off the back of the autotrader ad... Some lad came over this evening and bought it. Paid in £20 notes. I sold it for £680 which is less than I was hoping for at the start (it even had 3/4 tank of juice!!) but in view of the complete non-interest in it I'm happy just to have found a buyer.

That don't sound to bad as there not the best sellers anymore. I sell about three cars a week and find Auto Trader best for normal stuff under a grand. Stuff like any VAG tdi shite with silly miles sells in the first day. I do use ebay manly for older stuff or spares or repair late stuff as they can make silly money some times.

I am not surprised you had to take the lower offer even though the car looked well tidy, i dont know whats wrong with the general car buying public just now nothing seems to be selling at a decent price  or even at cheeper prices.

I have had this 05 shakin its arse for sale for a good few weeks and only one veiwing, the guy offered me £800 for it and i told him 9 and its his, he said he will let me know by the weekend  dinny do me any favours mate
