Sub £500 shite for sale in and around the Midlands?

Flying over to Birmingham Tuesday of next week and could do with something taxed and tested to potter around in, then drive back and either get my money back out of it or add it to the collection if it wins me over.

Not essential, I could always borrow aunty's Citroen C2. But would rather not

So yes it MUST be taxed and tested until at least the end of this month. 300 mile motorway trip to Stranraer to contend with on the way back so that rules out a Fiat Panda or Lada Riva. Thanks anyway. Preferably something interesting - not an Avensis or Almera.

Got a few lovelies in my eBay watch list but I reckon they could go stupid money, hence I'm posting this to see if any shiter may have something that fits the bill if eBay fails?

We've a Hyundai pukebox, sorry Atoz coming in tomorrow, want me to see what the deal is with that?

Has Mr Bo11ox still got the Rover for sale?

I'm pimping this every chance I get, but my Maestro is £450 with MoT until October and Tax until the end of March. Unfortunately, I'm about 70 miles away from Birmingham airport, so it's likely not ideal for you even if the car was of interest.

Not ideal but nothing's impossible. Good to know about it, I have a bit of a Maestro itch. How do you reckon it would cope with almost 300 miles of motorway speeds?

Dave - that Safrane had me tempted already, unfortunately it's not taxed. Looks real nice though. I have my eye on a Laguna V6 Executive on eBay, but it's in Bristol :(

I reckon it would cope fine, there's no inherent problems I'm aware of that would prevent it from tootling up and down motorways. It's not the fastest thing in the world, but you can keep up with modern traffic well enough. The thing that holds it back mainly is the gearbox since it has a VW van 'box in it, but it seems happy at 70mph just as much as at 30mph.

Sold it to Keith Adams of AROnline fame I think?

You may be right, but from what Mr Boll posted on AROnline yesterday there may have been shennanigans

T reg 2.0 Auto. LX.

MOT March 20, tax end of this month. 107k miles and absolutely mint inside. £300.

Photo was taken before I attempted the headlight bulb change. Who'd have thought it would be such a ball ache in a car as Mundane in this... I thought easy jobs like that we're supposed to be the bonus of dull motoring.

To be fair it's not that dull. The slush box is excellent, the seats are comfortable and I'd forgotten how much I love the Mondeo's interior. Power steering has given up today for some reason but hopefully the 300 mile journey home will pose no other issue.

Is the headlamp bulb a real shithouse on these? The handbook says to pop the headlamp unit out, its on 2 quick release screws or something. I have to do it on mine soon!

I did loads when I worked at the 'frauds, never really had cause to moan. I suppose if you are used to older stuff with 24" of room behind the bulb then it'd make you swear like a wakefield dinnerlady, but it's not really much worse than owt else similar

Drivers side fine, but of course mine was the passenger side - plastic bulb cover blocked by the battery. Second time round it would be fine, but not in the freezing cold with no handbook. There are two screws, one upper one lower, and one attaching it to the grille which was rusted to buggery. With just the first two removed I was able to pull the headlight forward enough to remove the bulb cover. It was fine to put back again.

I like that, Mondeos do appeal, even the Mk3 ones too.

May I recommend cable ties for future 'quick release' lamps :-)
