OK, so it has to go. I've ended up with an Audi 80 TDI Avant; I've outgrown a saloon.

 

Good points:

Have done about 25000 miles in it over the last 18 months. In that time I've changed the oil several times, replaced the glowplugs, replaced the diff (twice but we won't go into that), the propshaft centre bearing and replaced a rusty wing. The engine is superb, and I've enjoyed tanking round in it very much. There is tax and test until March, and half a tank of diesel left for the lucky buyer, as well as a few bags of sand in the boot which in combination with the decent Vredestein all-weather back tyres is most helpful for OMG snow kaos...

 

The bad:

Bodywork is somewhat shabby, but pretty solid. I've treated the surface rust with Vactan and it seems pretty much in abeyance.

I'll probably have to remove the radio because the Audi hasn't got one.

The (manual) gearbox. This is noisy and has slack in it although it selects all gears without issue and generally you can drive around it, but it does sound nasty. It's been rough since I got the car, and appears to be deteriorating slowly, however I would reckon on having to replace it in the not too distant future. Should be a fairly straightforward/cheap job.

Bargain, these things are incredibly reliable and iirc veg oil friendly, which is (or should be) a major selling point.

 

This Audi 80TDi Avant, it's not red with a towbar is it?

Nah, it's green without a towbar (sadly). The Merc has in my tenure ran without issue on a wide range of 'fuels' without issue, although the tank currently contains proper diesel
