Astra 1.7 DTI won't start....

Pick your brains time!

2002 DTI astra recovered into the garage last night, it "just stopped" then the battery was flattened by repeated starting attempts. A quick check of the fuses revealed that F6 (engine management) was blown (*very blown too) - a fresh fuse brought the ecu and engine control relays etc back online with no more fuse popping. No engine startee though.

Filter is full of diesel, tank is almost half full (verified) but no fuel at the injectors when cracked off and cranked over. Timing covers also removed and static timing checked.

Wiring diagram says that this fuse feeds the Fuel quantity adjuster, glow plug module, EGR solenoid and the wastegate actuator as well as the ECU... all of these appear to check out fine with a multimeter.

Code read (on a borrowed snap-on solus because the damned thing isn't OBD2)

gave a load of "circuit under voltage" faults and P1625 which is "ECM holding voltage circuit malfunction" - the solus suggests that it is most likely caused by a stuck engine control relay. Solus also says the MIL is lit even though it isn't, but it doesn't self test either so I think the bulb has probably been removed.

Last thing I did today was change the engine control relay. As you have probably guessed, it still doesn't run.

Anyone got any experience of these? The garage I borrowed the solus from said they won't work on DTI engined vauxhalls because of the number of them that refuse to run after (for example) a clutch change. Great. Better still, I had a ring around and got the same opinion (with added "blimey mate, if you can't fix it why are you asking me...").

My 1st check would be with the fool pump itself, fairly common on these I'm afraid.

Have you tried lobbing Easy Start into it and seeing if that'll fire it up then keep running afterwards? I'm pretty sure it was the 2.0 DTi that suffered from fuel pump failure, the 1.7s never seemed to bad on that score.

I did try easy start, it fires but doesn't keep running. Soon as the sniff is gone it dies again.

Immobiliser fault? I had an Astra van a few years ago and it turned out to be a problem with the immobiliser. Same symptoms. Cut out, no fuel delivery etc.

BURN IT

Not terribly helpful old chap....

:D

No, best suggestion so far! Owner might not agree though.

The symptoms (especially the popped ECM fuse) all seem to point towards a dud ECM. £500 odd quid part on a £700 car? Not looking good.

^ It mirrors some of the testing I did today - I can confirm that easystart and direct feeding of the fuel quantity relay do NOT make this one run.

Ahh well, maybe not so unhelpful after all eh? :D

Had this recently with a Corsa diseasel.

Unplugging the dash clocks fixed it. Weirdly, it was fine when they were plugged back in.

And people wonder why I like old cars...

Had a chap with a Corsa 1.7 DTi ,about a 52 plate I think, and that died on him,and there was a module bolted onto the back of the engine, slightly towards the offside, held on with 10 or 13 mm bolts;that had a dry joint inside which he had soldered and it worked again for a few months. I got to it standing underneath the car

That will be the famed EDU module that I've been reading about all evening then! It's on tomorrow's job list for removal and resoldering (just in case). I'll aslo pull the clocks out and fit some bulbs in the malfunction lights.

Then, if it still won't go, I'll suggest the autofive solution to the owner.

Its sealed for life apparently, but it was prized open with a screwdriver by a AA man, soldered, then sealed with insulating tape. I took it off the second time it failed, checked it was clean inside, cleaned up all the connections, and put it back, and said to him to traded it in,as it was a ticking timebomb, and he didn't fancy 700 for a module

sooo... there is a good chance it's already mauled and taped up then  (100,000 mile car, oil like soot, bought private and quite cheap 3 months ago) I wonder if all the wet weather got to it.

If its borked, you can't make it any worse ! It's not a very big unit from memory

Yup, dead EDU. Someone had already been inside and "soldered" it, and left a big blob rattling around on the back of the pcb. That's what went bang, taking out several SM chips and a voltage regulator.

Now I'm looking for a replacement. No point sending this one off for recon, they'd send it back.
