Online pre 60 exemption works!

Thought I'd try the new pre 60 tax disc exemption.

Used a car -UK registered 1988 but manufactured 1957 (in notes) -fully with the expectation that it would fail.

Tired yesterday (17th) -& the online system rejected me -no MOT.

This morning (18th) it accepted me & is posting me a free disc.

So -there's a suprise! Happy days -or not?

Thats good news Nigel had this car been on the road in the last few years as it would be interesting to know if pre sorn stuff can get a disc without a test. I will get a import pack from the DVLA and try and register the Hotchkiss next week

Posted

Yup-I really didnt expect it to be accepted. I've winged 4 others over to DVLA for UK registration last week -see what comes back from them.

Gonna make life a lot easier for us...

Yeap it will make things easier but it's probably not the best Idea they have come up with. It will save me a few quid though as the Hotchkiss has had a blacksmith type repair on one of the front suspension arms. It looks like it was done years ago and is solid but any welding on suspension parts is an mot fail if they spot it

OMG Bicklespam! (This thread was submitted three times Nige.)

Good news indeed, fingers crossed the others come back positive for you.

Just taxed my p4 thats been off the road a couple of years, going to run it about a bit so I can get it all MOT'able and MOT it anyway

Posted

Yup- understand that completely.

I dread the first run to the MOT station, where you're desperately trying to centre the brakes & settle the shoes, check the steering, listen for strange noises, warm the engine through, re-check the lights n wipers, shift the stale petrol through properly - all whilst trying to avoid all the mums in their 4wd tanks taking little Jasper to Nursery.

I find it needs a good few miles to get the car anything approaching reasonable if its been off road for several years -and isnt really loosened up/reliable until its covered at least 500. First drive is always interesting!

Just a thought. If you take it for an MOT and it fails on something trivial that you do not sort to save the expense/hassle of having a retest and the insurance company get whiff of this in the event of a claim, how do you think they will react?

Not suggesting you would, just something that popped into my head.

I'd suggest that it simply part of the much bigger can'o worms this Gov has opened!

So far, I dont think the Insurance companys have said anything about not covering a pre 60 mot exempt car, they are probably waiting for someone to prang one and then use it as an excuse to get out of paying up.

I have 2 'disced' now, awaiting 3 more back. Outlay nil..

No intention of running them till I'm happy they're safe, but that disc in the screen means that can now happen, whenever. Marvellous

Trucks and buses have had this exemption for years - and the insurance companies haven't worried too much about twenty tons of prime mover!

It is an infinitessimal amount of cars involved. Don't Panic is what I say.

I am Chris. Helps if I use a car- but its not imperative...

Docs now received for my first untested 1950's import. Somewhat suprised as I started the disc from 1/12, (Why? God knows!) but its arrived 5 days prior -guess ,as its free, it doesnt matter.

New V112 form enc - confirming to a Post office that its MOT exempt..

V5c to follow. Now I've just got to get the plates made -and thats it. Bonkers.

wonder if this works for MOT taxation classes like Ambulace? It didnt used to!

no, 1978 and 1985! Ambulance class is MOT exempt but you cant tax online without an MOT......

Hmmm....is that definite?......the regs state:

Requirement for a test certificate

Test certificates are required and must be renewed annually after :-

• 3 years, or

• 1 year in the case of motor vehicles used for the carriage of passengers with more than 8 passenger seats, taxis used to ply for hire (hackney cabs) and ambulances,

after date of first registration, or after date of manufacture if used otherwise (used abroad for instance).

The regs then list a whole load of exemptions from testing but none of them involve ambo's :?

I was told so by some bod at the DVLA, they even downloaded a copy of their handbook for me (which I promptly lost  ) I can't remember the number on the notes, but it comes under Health Related Vehicles (also mobile dentistry and X Ray). Technically speaking Hackney carriage is MOT exempt, but they have a Carriage Office test, but to tax need an exemption certificate.....
