Irish Shoite...?

Not wanting to jinx things, but I may be looking at a move from the big schmoke of Lanhdan, to Co. Dublin at some point in 2013.

Having seen the comedy prices the Irish government charge for road tax (£300 of 90's Cavalier would cost £540 to tax per year, when fitted with the 2.0 engine... ), it's no surprise that there never seems to be much in the way of decent ramen on the roads whenever I'm over.

Looked at taking the Peasant Pug, but if I registered it over there (which I'd probably need to, in order to get car insurance), I could be liable for VRT (registration tax) of around £600...

This led me to looking at obtaining something with 'vintage' status - The Irish have the same 30 year road tax exemption, but their's has been on a rolling basis, so anything post '82/83 now only has a fixed VRT of £160 on entry, with annual rent of £42 per year.

Up to '82/83 opens up a plethora of shite, which might just stand a chance as a daily driver - Can you run a 'vintage' as your only vehicle over there, or do you also need to insure another car to stand a chance of classic insurance?

Any input / advice from the Irish shiters? :)

If you are moving over and have owned the car for over 6 months you won't have to pay to register the car.

You will have to provide proof of ownership, proof that you were living in the U.K. and proof that you are moving to Ireland.

A friend of mine in Dublin has a nice Granada MKII Ghia for sale, which is eligible for the reduced rate, since it's a pre-facelift, I think a '79.

AFAIK he wants 400 yoyos for it.

He would also be your bloody best ticket into the Dublin autoshite scene.

Cheers Junkman - If it's a '79, it also won't need an MOT (NCT over there).

Plans are embryonic at the moment (waiting to see how things pan out regarding my current accommodation situation), but it'd likely be in the Spring I made the move.

Having had a good scan of the Irish Government websites, as Tagorasx says, I could probably bring the Pug in without VRT.

However, given the ridiculousness of the cost of road tax there, I've a hankering to import a 500SEC of 82/83 vintage, and roll around in the knowledge it'd be costing me £42 P.A. to tax, as opposed to the £1400 it'd cost if it were a year or two newer... :P

An SEC will naturally outshite a Granada and not by a narrow margin.

I don't think there is a shortage of those in Eire.

It may be a good idea to contact my contact in Dublin no matter what. He usually is surrounded by bona fide autoshite.

Not to be too contary to TagoraSX but I would have to disagree on the notion that owning a car for 6 months means you can avoid VRT. I owned my Polo for approaching 2 years when I moved here and I had to pay VRT. On a 1989 it worked out close to the minimum payment of €330.

Lovely... Some biscuit tins & a quick tickle with the MIG, and we'd be up and running...

Despite being more a Renault 14 fan, I do have my eye on this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/A-Reg-Mercedes-Benz-500-SEC-/370564873644?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item5647633dac

(Although the advert is gash, I like the 'top of the range, but povo look' :) )

Junkman - I may well get in touch nearer the time, regarding your contact in the Dublin autoshite scene... He sounds like a handy chap to know.

So the time is drawing near - Potentially looking at moving to Éire as soon as March...(!)

Would I be insane to approach the much discussed Purple Helmet, and offer to swap my S2000 (worth around £3k as a trade-in) for his Escort Estate?

Being a '75, I'd benefit from cheap Irish road tax, classic car insurance and not have the need to undergo an annual MOT (NCT).

It's a Mk2 'Scrote, so scene tax should mean it won't depreciate much - Parts are common & cheap, and it's easy to work on. Estate's practical for Ikea trips etc.

(And if I got bored, I could stick a 2.3 diseasal engine from a Sierra in it, to upset the rally jacket brigade... )

As for the 'running an old car as a daily' discussion, the Mrs has a 2012 Clio and will add me to her insurance, leaving me that option in the event of breakdowns.

You defo should, if only to then tell us what the famed helmet is like to actually deal with. Plus we can all have a chuckle when we see your S2000 on his lot with an £8000 sticker price.

Are you making a permanent move over to Ireland?

Surely you could just take a UK registered car over and run around in it for a very long time and just pop back to the UK when you need an MOT.

Your UK insurance will cover you for 3rd party as standard.

I was supposed to be working in Dublin a few years back and bought this Proton for that very purpose. I ended up being sent over to Israel and sold the car - which was exported to Ireland in the end...

I have nothing to add other then you must buy that Escort, just so those bad thoughts of me buying it can leave my head.

Doubt Purple Helmet would be up for a straight swap - what's in it for him? Mind you, his business model already seems dubious so go for it!

Ach, I was probably thinking aloud - I know nothing of Mk2 Scrote values, so wasn't sure if this represented a 'good' price, given the pricing strategy he applies to the rest of his stock.

The S2000 is SORN'd for the winter and buried in the garage...

I'd need to dig it out, MOT it / insure it / service & tax it, before contemplating noising up Mr Helmet.

I'll try and get onto the above once the OMG SNO KAOS dies down a bit... :)
