I have read many a thread on importing cars from the eu and even the states,

but has anyone ever done this from Australia, i have freinds over there and now a niece who could help on the Ausie side, but is it even worth the hastle,

Apologies for not being more specific but certainly someone on RR brought an old Subaru over a while ago so it might be worth digging there or possibly asking Mr Bickle, his tat collecting knows no bounds!

I cannot understand why Oz cars aren't imported grand style.

They aren't nearly as bulky as old yank stuff, yet pack meaty iron pushrod V8s.

Lots of them are superb shite, so what is there not to like?

Let me know when the first Holden Statesman and Leyland P76 have arrived, OK?

Cost prohibitive mebbe...i was quoted $2500 to send a Merc from Melbourne to Southampton..plus added landing costs..the Subaru on RR was only $300 and obviously not as big as Merc...so if u can find something cheap n small enough give it a go..

My boss imported a 2009 mini from UK to NZ a few months ago . cost a huge $1600. Thats 800 pounds, it made that a cheap runabout for his lady.

There are plenty of old Aussie cars here too!

Is it worth renting a 40ft container and buying a few cars and selling them when they get back to the UK, using the profit to pay for the shipping of the one you want to keep?

As most recall, I have imported several from various part of Australia, successfully. I investigated a Simca Aronde break recently (right hand drive, rust free, English speaking etc) near Melbourne, but the cost is currently uneconomic. I'm sure exchange rates will swing back soon, but for now -it would have cost too much .

However, if yours is a freebie, has personal relevance or you intend to go ahead ( come what may), I'm happy to chat over the pitfalls & good bits, & give you a few pointers for shippers.

Can you reveal some kind of a guide price for shipping/handling for a car from OZ, please?

If I see the going rates on Ebay.com.au for some of the stuff I like, I'd say it would be still worth it in may cases, even if the cost of getting it to here was in the 1500 squid area.

I just made this figure up (call it an educated guess, I know what it costs to get 2.5 tons of Detroit steel over here) but would this be half-ways realistic or am I way off?

The mid grade condition can be found cheapish..big old merc's are a hard push here just now...the local garage i used..and he has some qualitee marques passing thru,,,he told me the old car market is dead here in Melbourne..and it appears it is in Adelaide as well...everybodys on the new shite buzz here...im the only clunker sitting in a line of traffic..apart from the odd Holden ute..and u can pick up good ones for about $1500..no warrant or rego big plus for exporting..

1500 AUD is something like 960 squid?

If my shipping estimate is correct, that would mean - say - 1000 £ for an old heap, plus 1500 £ shipping, plus VAT ~ 500 £ so it'll end somewhere around the 3k mark on the road in old Blighty, no?

I'd be prepared to shell that out for an old Holden or sum such.

My Merc 300D with rebuilt powerstrain [sic]..new trans etc..it was a good easy project for me..cost 700quid..and i know its not hiding any rust traps...inland cars are the ones to go for..avoid coastal..Sth Aussie is particularly good..but even somewhere like Tasmania is hiding tonnes of gems..its cheap,,and that ferry is sod all..and another point is New Zealand..the NZ dollar is 30% cheaper than the Aussie..

is that the total or do old cars atract an import tax to our greedy guberment, how hard is it to register them once over here.

from my quick ebay look i fancy one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1972-FJ40-LA ... 4abd97373c

To register such a car in the UK is not a problem.

VOSA - MOT - local DVLA and off you go.

There is no duty on cars 30 years or older.

Wonder why the gubberment allow that then

It not automatic.

You must apply to the Customs & Excise EORI office in Swansea, using their 7 page online form -as soon as it sails. They will 'probably' exempt, or reduce -but dont bank on it. Do it early -in case there's an issue, as if they havent issued a number -you WILL pay full wack before the Importers will release.

Try getting that back....

Ask me how I know.......

I should add that the rate I put up was after extensive haggling between numerous importers, from a fairly regular user. The initial rate quoted was about 50% higher. Negotiable areas are loading & unloading fees, their commission (hidden in the bunkering),the fuel load up & where its landed.

Then there's getting it to the docks (no more than 5 days prior) & Ozzie Customs may require a full clean (happened once).

If its not a runner (i.e -its not capable of driving 500 yards onto a boat- getting a non runner off is their problem) then its container- and the fees escalate exponentially there.
