Taxing question

I need to tax a car which I don't have an MoT certificate for. The MoT is still valid, but I can't get a duplicate certificate very easily as it was tested at a garage the other side of Norfolk. VOSA website says I should be able to get a duplicate from any testing station, but this has turned out not to be the case. I can't tax it online as the insurance details haven't hit the MID yet (and from past experience won't do for several working days yet).

Can I tax it at the local DVLALO without the MoT cert? I know DVLA will have details of the MoT on their system to allow the online taxing system to work, so logically they should be able to sell me a tax disc over the counter with just the V5 and my insurance certificate, but logic and DVLA are not words that are often seen in the same sentence.

Not a veryhelpful answer but it's pot luck really.

Our local post office will issue tax with just the Insurance certificate and V5/reminder but the main post office in Wisbech won't.

have you got insurance certificate to hand?

I've taxed a car at post office and had to rummage through pockets for mot cert and bird on counter said it wasnt a problem as it shows on pooter

You could try ringing a post office, I've managed to get tax up until 5.30pm on a Saturday when I've gone into town

Bit of a backwards solution, but I wonder if taking out a couple of days insurance with Dayinsure might enable you to tax it online? It'll cost a few quid but if you're pushed that might be worth it; in my experience they hit the MID more or less immediately (=next day, certainly not as much as a week). I did this with the motorbike once (before the continuous insurance bollocks came in).

How many test stations did you try to get a duplicate from? If you have the V5 (you need the document number) it's a 5 minute job with the VTS computer.

I have heard of people going to the local DVLA office and they'll do it for you.

This MOT duplicate refusal thing is a right pain in the arse, VOSA told me to report any garage who wouldn't co-operate as apparantly they HAVE to give a duplicate if you have the correct things with you. It's time DVLA/VOSA started cracking down on the bastards who won't issue a duplicate, it's only five minutes work FFS and they get a ten spot for it.

I went to two separate stations - the first one the receptionist just told me point blank that they couldn't do it; the second one told me they could, then went into the computer and discovered they couldn't. I had the car reg and the V5C reference number and the computer told him that no MoT cert had been issued in the last 18 months for the car - I even got the VOSA website up on my phone to show him that the car was still MoT'd, but computer still said no. Then one of his colleagues came in and said that they could only issue duplicates for MoTs that had been done there - they couldn't do it for other stations' certificates.

Bollocks they can't, my nearest Hi-Q tyres place can and therefore get all my MOT and odd tyre business. One firm I used to work for (and have done loads of favours for) told me they couldn't do it unless they'd tested it, so I haven't spent a penny there since and am unlikely to again.

It's bollocks. I regularly issue certificates for other garages' tests. V5C reference number, and Robert's your Mother's Brother.
