2001 Sportage problems. Any suggestions?

Hi

My Kia sportage has started reving up to 2000rpm when i put the car in park or neutral (Auto) but seems worse when the engine is hot and doestnt do it when you turn off the ignition and then re-start, it will then happily tick over just under 1000rpm.

I also noticed today that after filling up with petrol (Again, lol!) The engine hesitated slightly when i was at idle.

Does this sound like a Idle control valve?

Secondly I have Green flag cover, if i were to phone them explaining these symptoms would they come out even if it hasnt officaly broke down?

Would they be any good at fault finding or just want to tow me to the nearest garage?

Any suggestions would be great, Im in the middle of the fens in a caravan with another two weeks of 50mile a day comutes followed by a 150mile drive back to suffolk and cant afford to get stranded or an expensive digonistics check at a garage.

Thanks in advance

James.

I'd say check the throttle position sensor first--it may be worn. The idle control is also a good idea, but I don't know how this is set-up on your vehicle. I think a trip to a shop for a diagnostics test would be best...it'll save you money in the long run. Why pay for a tow if you can still drive the car?

The hesitation problem could be many things, among which are either a clogged fuel filter or even low fuel pressure caused by the pump itself. In this case, having a fuel pressure test done should also help.

Also, check for a clogged air filter, or a dirty MAF sensor. I've seen people cure hesitation problems with a can of cleaner before, and even if it's not your only cause, it still wouldn't hurt to look into it. It might even improve your mileage by 5%!

If the Service Engine Soon light is on, pull the codes. If you turn the key to RUN and it does not light up, there may already be fault codes present. In CA the operation of this lamp is one of the first things they check for, and you fail on the spot if it doesn't come on. An entry-level OBD-II scantool/code reader is a good investment, as there's often too many places to start, and throwing parts at it will get expensive and futile!
