Soft-top MGB just spotted going into scrapyard, Bootle, L20.

Hi all,

I was just flying past Merton Car Dismantlers in Bootle, north of Liverpool (http://www.mertoncardismantlers.co.uk/contact-us) and I noticed what I think was a soft-top MGB just inside the gate. It’s obviously only just gone in – They’d left the lights on so it’s probably been driven in!

It was almost dark and I was travelling at a reasonable pace but I’m pretty sure I’m right. It constantly amazes me that people drive perfectly decent roadworthy vehicles into a scrap yard! (I’m not saying it is but it could be. In fact I had a major raid on a Volvo 940 estate in perfect condition in there last year. Sadly the owner had insisted on having a certificate of destruction issued to him, otherwise I’d just have bought the thing as it was!)

Be quick if you want it!

Regards,

D.

If it's gone there it's unlikely to ever return. To be honest, they'll probably just send it over the bridge as that's their normal procedure with shite.

It could be very rusty and just hanging on an MOT. The availability of really good Mk1 MX5s for the price of an average rubber bumper MGB roadster has lowered prices, and no doubt contributed to quite a few getting binned.

Once rot gets a really good hold of an MGB, its normally reshell time unless someone's very skilled with a welder.

You might well be right but it's worth a try for someone, if only for spares, I suppose.

Having said that, while I was raiding that perfect V940, someone drove in with a taxed and perfect turbo 850. The yard owner gave it the once-over and declared he was having it for himself as a runner, so some things do survive. We were chatting a while and he seemed fairly amenable to the idea of selling things whole, so long as they hadn't had the certificate issued. (The snag seems to be that some people, having seen ads explaining how you had to have one during the ludicrous scrappage scheme, now believe they're being diddled if they don't get one.)

Seven parts either side if you do them properly I seem to recall.

I think the 'ask for a COD' thing is also recommended for people getting cars removed from their driveway etc, because when scrap prices were low and you had to pay for a car to be taken away, some 'vehicle disposal operators' were turning up, putting the car on the back of the truck, pocketing £50 and then promptly dumping it a couple of miles away.

As the original owner was usually still the registered keeper, they were liable (and often charged) for the councils disposal costs.

By the way, Mr eeedelli, I believe the R30 is still 'making progress' toward being resurrected...

Hurrah! I dropped some info on to RatDat's site about it a while back but I haven't checked recently to see if there was any news. I'll look forward to seeing how it's going in the future! I just hope he hasn't left it out in the weather. As I found out the hard way, it doesn't withstand that sort of treatment.

Hi all,

I was running late this afternoon but just managed to very quickly grab a few shots and have a word with one of the blokes. The pictures are at MGB_at_Merton_Car_Dismantlers_2012_09_20

I think it's fair to say that it's very tatty but largely intact. He said it is running and driveable. It's obviously had a bit of a prang on the nsf wing. I really didn't have time (and wasn't equipped) to go diving around underneath to see what state that was in.

The bloke said there had been loads of interest and he's definitely wanting to sell it complete. He was muttering about a few hundred quid when I asked him what he was looking for and mentioned £600 at one point(!) He said that someone had made an offer and had said that if anyone else made a higher offer to contact him, so it looks likely that it's going somewhere.

Indeed, tonight when I went past at about 8pm, I couldn't see it near the gate so it may already have gone this evening, though I'd be surprised as it was nearly 4pm when I took the pics.

Regards,

D.

I was thinking it was no great loss...

Mind you, crap colour, rusty and horrible rubber bumpers, so it's shite spec. You could always paint it Harvest Gold.

I hate seeing anything old scrapped, even if it's common muck like a B.

I suspect it's already been snapped up. Hopefully gone to a good home anyway. There was no sign of it last night or this morning / evening. I only took the photos at 4pm yesterday and the bloke said there'd been loads of interest and was expecting it to go soon.
