Shite racing at Ingliston from 1985

One sunny Sunday sometime in (I think) 1985 I got passes to get into Ingliston race circuit near Edinburgh.

I remember having to sign a deceleration saying I accepted how stupid I was being standing where I was going to stand and if I got squished by an errant Volvo it was nobody's fault but my own.

Here are a few snaps from the day, some classic racing shite here. 8)

The kit car looks very Esprit like.

Thanks for posting! :)

Looks like Ian Forrest (of Knockill) racing the white Drambuie Imp / Chamois - Imagine Ricky Gall will be in one of the other Imps...?

Red & yellow car looks like an Elan 26R mashup with some sort of Clan Crusader...?!

Kit car further down looks like a S1/S2 Esprit body on a spaceframe of some sort...?

Also noticed 'Brian Luti' written on the back of the Volvo - He owns Dreadnought TVR / MG garage in Callander, and his son Paul Luti races an MG LE500 - http://www.racethemg.com/

These are excellent, thanks for posting them - the first meeting I got my dad to take me to was Ingliston in 1984. :D

GR95483 pics, thanks for posting :D

That Escort has rear wheels like a dragster and from the angle it's cornering, it looks like it's wearing stretched front tyres.

Does, doesn't it?

Any guesses for this one yet? I wondered about it being a Davrian or a GTM, certainly looks like another Imp based car.

The one thing I remember about that particular race (which seemed to be all Imp based creations) was how bloody quick they were all were!

Apparently it's a space frame chassis (central seating position), with ex-March Formula Atlantic corners and a Ford BDA - Later fitted with a 1 litre Imp engine... Chopped Esprit body plonked on top.

Front 3/4 are definitely Lotus Elan - compare the windscreen shape and the door shut lines.

Likely a space frame special, with F3 corners & wheels, and the body of a crashed Elan draped over it (with added fibreglass to cover the gaps).

They were quick - Think some got 120bhp from the 1 litre Imp engine, with a lightweight chassis & slicks plus lots of F3 bits...Rather nimble! :)

That car is the ex Nicky Ellis Cowgate Racing Elan, built around 1980. Formula 2 suspension grafted onto a lotus elan chassis, and semi spaceframed. Originally it had a big twin cam, but later a 2 litre Swindon BDX. Originally modsports it laterally ran in the Donnington GT series. Did about a 48.5 second lap at Ingliston, pretty quick car. It went to USA or Canada after A Dawson had it.

Hah hah, not that sad! Came up on a Google for "Davrian" - I just happen to know a bit about racing Elans, that's all...

I remember going to Ingliston many years ago.We were in the grandstand and i think it was a formula ford or 3000 race was starting. Anyway they had just literllally started and moved of off the start finish line when, for arguments sake, the chap in position 4, his front wheel hit the back of car 3s rear wheel. At that point all hell broke loose!. Car 3 spun arouns and went backwards into the barriers at the Grandstand. However car 4 wasnt quite so lucky. He lost it big time hit the Barriers at supposadly protection the spectartors and then barrel rolled it along the length of the barrier right in front of the spectstors!. The bang it went of with i can still remember!. Bits of car flying every where. He ended up upside down half on half off the barrier. Total silence decended on the grandstand. When a rather white and shite scared looking driver emerged from the wreck he waved to the crowd who imedatily gave him a standing ovation as he was helped to the awaitng Ambulance!.I wish ingliston still was a race track just needed to beef up the safety fences a bit!

Anyone else remember Jackie Stewart's pie in the sky plan to turn Ingliston into Scotland's F1 track? Must've been about that time.

I could look at pics of special saloons all day long, if anyone's got any more...

I remember Jackies idea to turn Ingliston into a gp circuit. Think funding as usual or lack of was the problem!

Quite a few cars made it over the barriers. Usually single seaters, last meeting I went to a Mk2 Golf Gti vaulted the barrier at Lefthander. Bedford / AWD hi-ab truck pulled the barrier straight so racing could continue, while they were doing that someone brought out an F3000 car to do demo laps on the short circuit to keep the frozen to the bone punters entertained.

^Cheers for that, some fantastic stuff in there. Altho' I shouldn't have smiled at this, but did...

Douglas Niven in the Border Reivers 5.7 litre Boss Escort - the car was written off in the final later in the day when the car somersaulted the toilet block on the back straight!
