Fall in scrap prices

Anyone had a good price on a scrapper recently? Grays in Kirkcaldy last month were paying great prices... a mate weighed a Volvo S40 on a W plate and got £300.. and was given a "price list " offering strong money - up to a grand for some cars.

I have a focus i need to weigh and I ran a quote through cartakeback in May who offered £240 collected from aberdeen (again by Grays) but of course I've just got round toclearing it out for uplift now and the price has plummeted to £120...

I have to admit I was surprised they were paying as high a figure before but wondered why the sudden halfing of prices...

Well that's just marvellous as I should be getting shot of four scrappers this week in Harrow, just did a quick search of local companies and the only price I saw quoted was £80, maybe the bubble has burst.

Nah, I bet the Chinese scrap ships moored in Liverpool have sailed off back home, when they return empty the price will go back up. (or so i've been told in the past)

Scrapped a set of four alloys and got a grand total of £8.20. Perhaps lower values are a good thing, as it may reduce the amount of pikey thefts and chod being scrapped?

Two possible reasons:

The Chinese demand for scrap iron and steel has taken a bit of a hit recently:

Also the Korean steel mills are requiring less imported scrap (ironic if it is due to local Hyundais being scrapped  )

On the other hand, the Chinese demand for scrap aluminium is rising; could this now make an Audi A8 an economic proposition 8)

alli prices in the north are low, and will stay low, as Alcan is shut, so no local demand for scrap alli.

the copper price is staying low too, as china has bought a larger percentage of african copper mines, so doesnt need so much scrap copper

One of the local car breakers here is paying £200 for any car that drives through the gates under it's own power.

i have a friend on shetland and he says its july and august when most islanders head to the mainland to buy another car - this maybe the reason why this glasgow yard is paying 200 for 170 quids worth of scrap (he also says MOT and tax are not that important to islanders)
