idiotboy Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 As I sit here in front of the 'putor I'm now considering whether I should just give up owning any form of motorised vehicle. I have 4 cars, 3 motorbikes and none of them are free from issues. The Allegro has consumed a wheel bearing possibly due to a sticking calliper, the Ami still needs a new cylinder head fitting, the 2CV last night failed on the way back from collecting a load of Allegro spares from Luton, by braking its rear engine mount (doesn't sound a problem but it is), the Schwalbe is in bits, the MZ still hasn't been delivered as the garage its in has had the lock vandalised (superglue) so the seller can't get it out until the council sort the lock, and the Solex has a puncture. Oh and I've just sold the LNA new owner collecting Friday. I've also got to get to Lincoln this weekend which is a swine and too far on the solex. The engine mount issue might not sound too problematic but it causes more issues on my 2CV as its fitted with the earlier style rod operated throttle. Essentially what is happening is that the engine is moving in relation to the throttle rod and thus under braking the throttle opens more, making stopping a bit of a challenge especially on badly adjusted inboard front drums. The trip back through the mean streets of Luton, the arse of the car low due to onboard Allegro shite required the use of the optional 2CV assisted front brake servo i.e. the missus pulling on the handbrake during braking when I was trying to stop. Each time we managed to shudder to a halt, we had the added ignominy of being hit on the back of the head by a pair of Allegro sill covers. We made it home eventually and I've ordered up a new set of engine mounts, I just hope they arrive soon so that I can fit them before Saturday. grrrrrrr
dollywobbler Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Sounds like a normal day in the world of idiotboy to me! What are you whinging about? What's up with the Ami's cylinder head?
jonathan_dyane Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Aaargh, simples, you just have to knock it out of gear before braking
idiotboy Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Sounds like a normal day in the world of idiotboy to me! What are you whinging about? What's up with the Ami's cylinder head? The numpty who rushed to finish the car for last years registers day, used an air wrench (or similar) to fit the sparkplugs into an Aluminium head! The result was a spark plug being blown out on the way back from the NEC last year as no thread was left in the head. A specialist tried to helicoil it and lost part of the helicoil down the bore so I need to get the head off, extract the helicoil and fit a new head
idiotboy Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Aaargh, simples, you just have to knock it out of gear before braking Doesn't make any difference as the engine and box still move under braking, in gear or not. I tried that idea
dollywobbler Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Ah. Ami sounds like a proper pain. I do hate numpties who overtighten things. Happened to my 2CV after a specialist serviced it. Two days before I was due to drive to Switzerland. Grrrr! At least if you knock the 2CV into neutral, it won't brake and accelerate at the same time. Might rev itself to death, but these engines take some abuse. Go for it! Alternatively, it's only Wednesday. Plenty of time to get the Aggro fixed!
idiotboy Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Agro booked into local garage for next Tuesday, wheel bearings have now arrived as has a new set of pads and a fitting kit. I'll ask them about possible welding work also. New mounts ordered from Roy at ECAS at 9.30am so hopefully they'll arrive on Friday. Tyre pumped up on Solex. Also been having a garage clearout and found some new and 2nd hand parts that are surplus. Austin Mini Clutch kit (new)Mini fan belt. (new)Mini Waterpump. (new)Mini oil filter (new)Mini fuel pump (new) and some 2nd hand What appears to be a Mini distributor with electronic ignition module. (new ish) Any interested Mini owners out there?
cort16 Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Just pick the one you want on the road the most and get it going. Worry about the rest later. Trying to deal with loads of old shite all with loads of problems will DESTROY YOUR MIND.
idiotboy Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 hahahahahhahahahhahahhahahahahhaahahahahaahhahahaha
skattrd Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I don't mean to pry idiotboy, but anything I can help with as I'm quite near Lincoln ... Just pick the one you want on the road the most and get it going. Worry about the rest later. Trying to deal with loads of old shite all with loads of problems will DESTROY YOUR MIND. I totally agree with this, pick the one you like most or pick the easiest one to fix ... just get something running. Trying to deal with 5 cars at once gets you nowhere and you end up borrowing your sisters Panda.
dollywobbler Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Mini dizzy and clutch (if suitable for a 1985 998cc) might well be of interest Matt. Probably the other stuff too.
