Les at BL Transverse in London is probably the closest you'll get to a specialist. Where's the corrosion?

Found a hole each side on inner wheel arch where it meets the sill and in the rear wheel arch where it meets the sill. Looks like the underseal cracked and harboured moisture. I'm a bugger for poking with my screwdriver....should have been an MOT tester.

I only spotted it when I noticed a hint of red, white and blue under the underseal, it turned out to be the wiring ribbon glued to the inside of the drivers footwell.

I want to get that sorted before it gets worse

Despite the recent woes that does look a lovely example. I bet once you've sorted the few issues it'll do you reliable service.

+1 on the Les recommendation.

What's Les' work like? If I need some bodywork that is is it likely to be a good job? Only if its "just sling a patch on" I can go to a local back street garage but if he's the dude when it comes to fettling a rusty agro then I'm up for the Journey to Norwood.

I can't vouch for his welding as never had him do any, but he's a good, old fashioned type of mechanic who you can trust (and won't charge the earth). He's also good at sourcing parts for customers, as one day I was in there and he was phoning around trying to find a clutch for an Austin Ambassador!

The only problem with Les (who is a great bloke) is that often he is pretty busy so may take a while before he can take it on. I wouldn't have thought you need a specialist, get a decent local fabricator/welder. Sadly I can't recomend on in your area.

Well today the Allegro is away at a local garage having a few jobs done.

Wheel Bearing has been fitted, rear brakes adjusted, calipers cleaned up and coolant changed. I've had a quote on welding which is looking like £50 a corner.

Thanks to Craig the Princess for the fuse box cover which is now cleaned up and fitted.

Does anyone have any thoughts on vinyl roofs? Are they a good thing or a curse?

Posted

Vinyl roofs are only a curse if you decide to remove one in which case you can have hours of fun* removing all the old glue. My DS saloon was metallic beige with a brown vinyl roof when I bought it in 1985.

When I changed the colour in the 1990s It was decided the easiest solution was to put a new vinyl roof on in a more suitable colour.

Fortunately when we decided to change the colour again when she was brought out of storage two years ago the blue roof went very well with the Delta Blue paint.

Can you not unbolt the roof panel on Deessess? So maybe have a vinyl one and a painted one?

I have never taken the roof off, afeared of what is lurking up there. Roof is fibreglass so never looks quite the same colour as the rest of the car if painted. Bonnet is ally so is a bugger to keep the paint on.

When I had my DSpecial the roof had to come off for roof rail repair. Its quite an involved job on the later 1970's D's as they are bolted and bonded. The earlier cars are just bolted.

Thinking long and hard about DS ownership again whilst at the DS rally this year (saw my old motor for sale at a higher price and more rust) and I've come to the conclusion that if I was going to have another it would be a Mk1 or Mk2 frogeye. Non assisted steering and povo spec, in some wild late 50's or early 60's colour like capucine or coral. Sadly I'll need to wait for my lotto win.

Yes there was an amount of R reg in that field in Kent.

Really do need a back box now, its blowing really badly so if anyone knows of a backbox out there please let me know.

The next awkward job to do this weekend was the seemly easy task of replacing the knackered front fogs with working rust free ones. How hard could it be?

Ha haha hahahhahahaha

As it turned out quite a challenge...
