I'd like a horrid, miserable, shit old caravan...

...to tow with the FSO on a car license with no trailor entitlement. Must be tiny. Much hated. Safe to use and cost between free and half a pint of Cask. There I've said it. [edit] The scrapyard were so appalled by the last Eldis 2 berth, building site tea break horror that they had in that they refused to sell me it. FOR ACTUAL MONEY

A Polonez will tow, and it'll do it happily, but... have you considered asking some Land Rover chaps about borrowing a roof tent? Your car will take ladder bars on the guttering, and wouldn't it look shite on the way there and back! If you don't have towing entitlement this might be the way forward.

Sounds interesting... I'm told I can tow a small weight on just a B license though?

If weight is the issue you want a trailer-tent. Added bonus, you can see following traffic because it doesn't block your back window. :D Seach ebay for "trailer-tent" and see what comes up.

you and me both. I hate camping, but I could happily spend a soggy weekend in Bognor drinking tea in a cramped fibreglass box. There's a semi-folding 2 berth caravan on a nearby garden, but frustratingly it's not abandoned and looking for a new home. It's in Autoshite orange and white too.

Just would like to say F U world from time to time and go live nowhere with a cat I dont have and a guitar I dont have and cant play and live off rain water and stewed nettles.

Ideally, you want a lightweight folding caravan or trailer tent, but for reasons I don't understand they seem to command good money. It's like people actively want to be miserable. Which means all of the above are unsuitable, but I wanted to share the love-hate.

There is a lot of confusion over what you can or can't tow if you passed your test after a certain date. I'm not sure if its a combined weight issue,or quite what it is - no one seems to know for certain

Them caravans look nearly as bad as my 1974 Elddis Whirlwind. I got mine off a old bloke that I used to work with, he had owned it from 1974 till 2009 when I bought it.

As I understand it you can tow a trailer up to 750kgs MAM/GVW (Maximujm authorised mass) with no hasle (99% of trailer tents are fine - mine's 450kg). If the trailer is heavier than that, that's OK asx long as the total MAM/GVW of the whole shebang including the car doesn't add up to more than 3500kg, and the total loaded max weight of the trailer can't be MORE than the unladen weight of the car.

I reckon you'll struggle to find a caravan other than folding rapidos/eriba puck type jobbies that come in under 750kg but I could be wrong and often am!

I may have underestimated the weight of a small caravan somewhat! The little ones in Volks pics I'd have guessed at 500-600kg?

You *need* that Esterel folder behind the Polonez, just change the Esterel to read Autoshite instead and you're sorted.

Edited to add: what am I saying? I *need* that Esterel for behind the Princess, it's a perfect match!

I'd like an Elddis Whirlwind, that's the one I failed in buying from the scrappy. Just read that I can only tow upto a max laden weight of 750kg and that actual or unladen weight is quite irrellavent. I already want to eat my own head, the legislation is that droll and unclear

B Motor vehicles with a MAM of up to 3,500 kg, no more than eight passenger seats, with or without a trailer - weighing no more than 750 kg

B As category B but with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg. The total weight of the vehicle and the trailer together can’t weigh more than 3,500 kg. The weight of the trailer, when fully loaded, can’t weigh more than the unladen weight of the vehicle

Nah, you can tow over that as long as the combined weight is less than 3500kg and the van weighs less than the car.

Also, we should all buy the Esterel. If I hadn't recently bought a trailer tent and wasn't up to my fucking eyes in future debt trying to get the Saab fixed...

Yeah the FSO is around 1100kg and its mam is 1560kg I seem to remember =)

I thought the law was if you passed your test after 1st Jan 1997 you could only tow a single axle trailer, if you wanted to tow a twin axle you had to take a test.

Posted

go pass the test - the worst that can happen is you fail, the best is you can then tow shite on a car transporter.

Thank goodness I passed my test when I did, entitling me to drive just about anything!

Get a nutshell folding caravan or a portafold or even a Berkeley teardrop!

That folding rigid caravan is fucking ace, and could be the answer I'm looking for myself. I'd love to have a caravan, but am stuck for somewhere to keep it.

Gonna see if I can find one now!

Gawd. Now I'm looking for a caravan. I've had an Eriba Puck. The 2CV hated towing it and it was too small to be comfortable. We went back to a tent. The BX can tow up to 1100kg though, so that gives more options...

Quite fancy 'circling the wagons' at Shitefest! I'll probably just use a tent though...

I hear it's about £800, the test. I'd like my 7.5 tonne too... Then i'd be dangerous. I'd have to design some ramp contraption so I could park my cars 2 high I'd have that many.

Phwoar, get a load of this (courtesy of the Google search above).
