Classic Shite

Last year I went to the first proper show in the Polo. Now, slight confession, I wasn't aware of the sort of show it was so I didn't even bother to clean the Polo anything more than a quick wipe over. For some reason, I thought it was just a low-key club meet, I hadn't realised it would have some posh classics. I felt like a right proper gate crasher and the judges seemed less than impressed when trying to work out how I'd got in.

The head gasket blew either on the way (serious lack of power, some water loss) or on the way back (fart out the exhaust, bit of white smoke). Here's some pictures of the quality chod I saw.

Favourite car of the show for me had to be this steam powered Franklin from the 1930s. I desperately wanted to see the engine, but the weather wasn't conducive to the owner opening up and I was too shy to ask. I was truly in awe of this thing and I suppose it's not *really* shite, but it *is* beige.

Fudge, I seem to have parked next to Steve's very original, very classic Triumph and Dave's very original, very classic Range Rover.

Shiny Swedish wedge.

Non-frilly Fiats.

The star of the show for me.

I didn't even know what this was. My notes tell me it's a Morris Oxford.

Little details like these door marker-protectors are a fascination for me.

Far too tidy little MG.

Excellent early Landie that is still used as intended.

Another lovely old British thing, a Hillman in this instance.

A couple of diddy ones.

Wouldn't mind this pair on my driveway. Not that they'd fit at the moment.

This is the first Metro(politan) I've seen in the tin and my love for them is not diminished because of it. They're another wish list car I doubt I shall ever own.

So there you go... that was June last year, my first proper show in my own car. I managed to get lost twice on the way there and blow a headgasket but I limped home without any further incident and received absolutely no favourable comments from anyone outside of the club on my stupid VW. Had an enjoyable day out though.

But you can take the Princess this year and blow them all away :D

Great pics

Don't know what you were worried about. Someone has managed to blag a Volvo 480 in there....

The Somerset wasn't MAS 901 was it? It looks like my dad's old one, but if it is, it's gained spotlights, badges and had the wheels repainted cream. It must have had a full respray, recovered seats and several dents and areas of rot removed from the tired bodywork. In conclusion, it's probably not.

My guess is the Speedwell Blue A35 is UWX 983? If it is, it belonged to the ex webmaster of the club website who recently threw all his toys out of the pram in a spectacular fashion.

Sorry for my rambling. Top pics!

Nice write up Volksy and great pics. Not sure I'd go to the trouble of masking the reg plates though.

Did you get a pic of the reg on the black X1/9? Thats a Lido - just want to know if its the one I think it is...

Usually, I don't bother masking registration numbers, not sure why I did on this set.

For the curious, registrations are as follows:

Austin Somerset - FSL 914, so no, not MAS 901.

Austin A35 - 193 DTJ

Fiat X1/9

Blue one - F 855 KKK

Black one - C 19 JRL

Yes, I can indeed take the Princess this year and park very badly indeed. I want to get a tatty old guzzunder for use at shows instead of having oil-absorbing cardboard sheeting, I shall be scouring the local antique centre and charity shops for just such a vessel I think.
