Whistling turbo - advice please.

Hi guys,

Just picked up my car from its service. One of the things that they warned me about was the whistling turbo. I must admit that this is rather loud when I am driving it.

Any ideas what the problem is likely to be? And more importantly, how much it is likely to rectify?

Also, they warned me that like some Lib Dem MPs the car pulls slightly to the left. I take that it is a tracking issue?

Many thanks! :D

Could be a number of things. Possibly a leak. Have a really good look over the pipework and intercooler ..any splits can be repaired cheaply by wrapping the pipe in silicon tape.

Could also be worn turbo bearings the cure for which would be replacing the turbocharger. Lastly check the diagphram of the dump valve. It could be caused by a split in the diagphram which will slaow the boost to be pushed back into the turbo charger rather than being vented. This can sometimes cause a whine and will defiantly knackered the turbo bearings after a while.

In a diesel car a leak in the turbo induction will usually impact the economy and can cause smoke under load due to over rich mixture.

Pulling to the left could be tracking or suspension wear under braking it is caused by a braking imbalance. Also a badly balanced wheel can cause a car to pull in one direction. Start with the tracking .

Did it do any of that when you took it in?

Thanks scooters. :)

It did to be honest. Thought the pulling slightly to the left was just a characteristic so never really thought it was much of a problem.

When I had my clutch replaced the garage (different one) reported a 'blown turbo'. At least that might account for the shite fuel economy...I'm getting 36.4 mpg according to the trip computer but I should be getting around 41 mpg urban.

Hmmm. Is it fast as fuck? It should be, I remember driving them when I worked for NDS and it should be a flyer. Should do much better on fuel too,

At least rest assured that this is not a Renault engine, so I hope the problem is one of piping as scooters suggests.

Tracking now sorted this morning by a local Fast Fit garage...although they now advise that my 4 tyres, while the tread depths are still good, are starting to crack. ££££££ :x

Thanks Jonathan. It is incredibly fast. :D Probably not Subaru Impreza Turbo fast but quick enough for me. Apparently it was the quickest Nissan in the range prior to the launch of the 350Z! 8) I thought that it was the Renault engine from a Laguna II. :? Although I guess it could have been a Nissan design just prior to the Alliance with Renault (Renault Alliance? )

I will probably get Nissan to diagnose the problem with the turbo tomorrow. £££££...the 'house deposit fund' dwindles further. :x

The car is costing me a big fortune but I need this to be running right and economically in prep for it's impending 120 mile a week commute (once the prospective employers are satisfied that I am 'of good character').
