I like S80s, and while they don't have the hewn-from-solid feel of a 240 they're better screwed together than a lot of modern stuff. A diesel on 68K should have a lot of life left in it, and as Fiatdaft pointed out they also make a nice warble for a diesel.

That's quite timely as I'm looking at the Volvo S60 at the moment, either T5 petrol or D5 diesel.

Saw a nice S60 2.0T locally and was very impressed with the looks of the thing, especially the interior. Came across this thread all about the diesel version, which I presume must have similar specs to the S80? As with most things it appears the earlier pre 2005 engines where much better and less expensive when they go wrong. Have a read:

that's the one -

looks like a good un - one of the few 'new' cars I would have but I would be a bit wary of the complexity of the diesel...but he'llbe fine with that - honest john sahys the D5s are good but watch out for timing belt evidence on 60k and, always check the oil levels as the electric gauge can bugger up - also diesel can sometimes get into the oil supply

My boss has had volvos all his life and the last three with d5d engines, bloody quick cars if a little wishy washy probably due to the excess weight, the front wheel drive one was a nightmare to pull away in unless you where crawling it would just light up the tyres.

The first one at 69k and just comeing upto 3 years old reved itself into oblivien, the second was a little troublesome and the ocean race one he has now has been fine so far, all three cars have been cause for volvo head office sending a warning letter to be vigilant with oil levels. they must be aware of a problem

other problems that have required me to drop them at the garage for him other than the engine problem, uneven tyre wear twice on first car once on second everytime they set the tracking, worn and rattleing bushes both cars, brakes worn to the metal even though the computer said 18k miles untill brake service, key lost its codeing, electric handbrake fault four times between the first two cars, radio stoped working, squeeky noise which after 3 visits turned out to be rear suspension, battery drain which never got sorted as he gave up after the third time and bought a new one.

Good motors, but the residual on S80's drop like no other Volvo, was the same with the S70 before. I didn't even bother trying to sell mine, it went over the bridge sadly.

Basically, a V70 would hold it's value for a lot longer. Depends on what he wants, and how long he keeps it I guess.

he'll have it for about 5 years - it will probably end up in the scooters stable with a fucked alternator!

These are on the same platform as the current Mondeo/S-Max/Galaxy (Ford EUCD). A slightly useless fact really, but there you go :) .
