Peugeot 406 key related grief

Shite ! The key to the 406 just broke in the lock ... Basically the metal bit has come off the plastic bit. No problem thinks I.. As it had been a remote fob on which the remote buttons half had long since broken off it was only attached by to a bit of plastic so I didn't think it would make any difference - but now when I put the key in a light comes on the dash with a picture of a key and it won't start... Any ideas ??

Piss taking aside have you tried locking and unlocking the doors with the remote then trying to start the car?

If you hold the plastic bit RIGHT NEXT to the lock barrell will it work? If not it might be that the little transponder chip has fallen out of the platic bit, in which case you need to find it and put it in very close proximity to the ignition barrell to get the imobiliser happy - that's assuming it has a little plastic chip style immob, which it might not do. I don't know these.

By way of example, this is my Proton key. The all important immob chip (without which the car wouldn't start) is that tiny little bit of black in the middle. I superglued the fuck out of it, having found it in the dark on the ground in a car park (aftyer my key fell apart). Result.

Is this one of those keys with a transponder in it? Possibly the head coming off has interfered with the signal, so the car now thinks you're trying to start it with the glovebox key or something. In which case I would guess you'll have to see about a new transponder-equipped key, which may mean a visit to the dealer. Sorry.

What tone said. I had to do the same for my mate when she dropped her keys in the street, and the printed circuit board fell out (Pug 407). The car was having none of it until I found the PCB and put the batteries back in it. I only lashed the key together with a big lump of duck tape, but as soon as the electrical gubbins in the key were getting power, the car started OK once the metal bit was placed in the ignition barrell and twisted.

It'll be the transponder. Put the snapped key body (the plastic bit...) next to the key you're using and it'll go.

One of my mates took the immobiliser chip out his Fiesta key and taped it inside the the cowling as he only had one key for it.

He then just had some cut at the local key place and they all work as the immobiliser bits always with the car. gr14 for security though.

Tiny transponder chip found lying on the ground and problem solved. Pain in the arse though now the key is in bits.. I may well go down the route of gluing the chip to the ignition. If someone stole it they'd probably be doing me a favour !!
