so what doesn't work on your shite?

Why change the 'stat in spring? Now's when you need it! I'm bravely going to attempt a 'stat change on the BX tomorrow and might even wire in the temp gauge that I've had kicking around since about October.

Because it's bloody cold outside and I'm disinclined to start messing about under the bonnet at this time of year! It's running well enough and if I'm cold in the car I have a sheepskin, it'll get me through what little we have left of this winter. Then I can change the thermostat when the weather warms up in plenty of time for next winter :)

Good luck with changing the one on the BX :)

Meh. I discovered this week that as long as you keep moving, working on the car this time of year isn't too cold. It's amazing how latex gloves seem to keep your hands warm. Mind you, the fact that I ran the Maverick's engine before working on it also helped, and I've found that a warm engine makes a 'stat change easier as it tends to stop the bolts shearing off. Famous last words?

just re-read the thread and noticed that people have included their project cars, so in the spirit of things, gentlemen I give you the 1959 Galaxie

engine siezed, though actually i managed a quarter of a revolution out of it today. after 6 weeks of soaking in diesel. and attempting to turn her over on the crank nut every day. thats the most turning that engine has done since 1974.

both sills are rusted out (inner and outer) though i'm not sure this can be classed as "not workng"

slow puncture on front left tire (american spelling used on purpose)

other than that, i'm crossing my fingers and hoping that everything else works perfectly. why shouldn't it, it was only parked behind a barn in central Kansas for 38 years.

Hi all, well everything works onthe xantia but 2 things don't work well: the washer jets work but have a similar flow rate to an 80s yeah old pissing. Then the remitted locking, though fully functional, sometimes causes one side of the indicators to stay on permanently until I pull out an alarm fuse that then causes the alarm to go off unless I override it with the key. Waiting weeks cures the indicator fault so fuse goes back in, solution is to open doors VIA key. Dipped beam is shite too.

CX, well everything works too but the heated rear window is poor. Starter dodgy and big hole in sill :D

Scorpio:

Passenger-side electric mirror- used to work until the vandals kicked it in!

Amazingly, everything else works, but some things are a bit annoying/intermittent. These include a very noisy aircon compressor (it works alright but the bearings are on the way out, a new one costs a fortune and a used one can't be guaranteed to be any better), a keyfob that locks/unlocks only from a tiny number of very specific angles which I haven't bothered to figure out, and some other weird, intermittent noises from under the bonnet but not the engine itself (could be something to do with the PAS pump). The radio is another interesting case- the detachable security panel doesn't really want to be attached to the rest of the system, and has to be wedged in with a small piece of cardboard!

A couple of new ones on the BX to attend to at the weekend:

-Battery warning light stays on every now and again early into a journey, not long enough to kill the power though thankfully. I've got a new voltage regulator so hopefully that'll sort that one.

-Rear seat refused to fold down at the weekend. Considering how the lever is made of stupidly flimsy plastic I didn't want to force it too much. Defeats the object of an estate car somewhat if you can't fold the seats down :)

And one that I'd forgotten about until reading up on the new MoT regulations concerning inspection of door hinges. Oh dear....

T2;

- fuel gauge

not a problem - 55 litre tank - fill up every 200 miles - what can go wrong?

fucker runs out of fuel at 196 miles - 14 emm pee - fucking gee

Oh yeah. T25 is about the same. I put new clocks in, which seem to have a more conservative fuel guage, with the old one I could hear the pump sucking air just above red.

Fuel tank pisses out if I put more than £45 in, but even on steady motorway runs it does 17mpg, giving me about a 200 mile range....

I really don't want to know what the mpg is on mine but it ain't pretty...

... The fact that it does anything is pretty good for a T2

Not an update on stuff not working, but a bit more on T2 economy.

My fuelly shows 15 mpg, because I started the fuelly the week I took the van off the road for the winter so it's not correct.

Further to the 14 mpg, when it went for bodywork / paint it was shuffled in & out of the garage for 3 weeks & managed 13 mpg.

When we use it for holidays & shows it can manage 28 or 29 but to see how much I could persuade it to do,

I filled it up here in the village, drove at 50 - 53 mph the full length of the M42 & down the M5 to Taunton

some 200 miles, came off the M5, pulled into the very first petrol station I saw & brimmed it again - 33mpg - it's not spectacular is it?

I have a Skoda Octavia with a broken "check engine" light - does that count?

On my Renault 14:

The heated rear window doesn't

The cooling fan doesn't, must fix before the warm weather

There is a problem with the rear offside door in which the locking mechanism has come loose and is currently permamently locked until I fix it

The round knob on the end of my window winder has fallen off!!

On the Megane:

The temperature and clock display have become invisible

The after market radio/cd has stopped working

On the Maxi (which is theoretically a project car but has an MOT next week):

Headlights and indicators don't work

The ns indicator comes on when I operate the brakes

A job for Sunday me thinks!

Hmm, something else I forgot about the Sterling - The oil light on the trip computer used to always stay on. When I first had it on the road I think there was a bit too much oil in it, so I had it drained to its normal level, then the light stayed on all the time.

A weeks ago at a mates house I checked it again, the level was very low so I topped it up, a few days later I took it to a flat and level surfaced car park, I left it for half an hour switched off then checked the level about 3 or 4 times, the oil is to the very top if only a pin head slightly over. Now its a gamle on whether when I switch the car on does the oil light come on or stay off, sometimes it does, other times it doesnt. Strange.

The rear demister and headlight flash don't work on the 340.

The wipers also only work on the highest speed setting, which is really rather irritating.

polo update.

The drivers door is opening now and again. Something isn't right in there, the outer handle "feels" notchy and as i said, sometimes doesn't open at all.

I snatched at the light switch the other morning as i pulled away and it came right out of the dash. The lights still work and it went back in ok, but it rattles now

2 strips of the rear demister have ceased to work this week.

on the plus side, I'm chasing an exact copy of my car (bar the paint scheme - mine is rather unusual) for spares, so hopefully i'll all the bits i'll ever need and more to fix mine
