Mark 1 Suzuki Swift - opinions?

As mentioned in my intro topic, my first car was an 86 Swift and I've been half on the lookout for another, just to confirm it was as good as I remember it. Some say you should never go back but I say f*ck it! They've all but disappeared here now, not that there was that many to begin with but one has surfaced and now I have the dilemma. Should I go for it? It's the facelifted version, similar to this one:

Anyone here familiar with them? The facelifted version wasn't what I wanted but I reckon it's all I'll find here now. And it's in excellent shape. Help...!

GTi was a mad little fecker. Other than that, and Subaru doing 4x4 variants, I know nothing.

Bloody hell! 10 months ticket and 295? get it bought! I can't remember anything bad about these, but they were never that common in the UK and I think its a different engine to the more common mk2, so maybe harder to get parts for? other than that its something I'd be happy to buy.

That is cheap alright. It works out at around €350 BUT...the importation tax on it would be €720! That's the tax office's way of saying fark off, we're trying to rid the country of tat, in preparation for the complete tarmacadding of the country to make a car park for Germany.

The one I was interested in is going for around €7/800 and is pretty much minty fresh. If I do buy it'll be that one.

I don't know owt about them but that certainly looks like a good deal for someone.

There's an E reg Swift still in regular use around here, I've been trying to get a pic of it for ages :D

Have owned a few 80's small Japanese cars, I love them. Ride is always back breaking, but totally reliable, nippy and good on fuel.

Cheers for the link on that one. Spotted it the other night, bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing. Import duty on it would be prohibitive and I reckon it would struggle to get through the National Car Test here too. A GTI would be nice though. Ultra rare.

A fellow Boards.ie user spotted this one in Kilkenny last year. It's identical to my old one, even down to the colour. Supposedly, the dealers can still supply parts for these!

I didn't think they were allowed to charge import tax for imports from with the EU? Unless I've got my wires completely crossed, which is possible...

It's vehicle registration tax (vrt) as opposed to import tax but it all amounts to the same thing. A classic only costs somewhere around the 50 mark (once it's 30 years +), which is why so many classics have made their way over here.
