Do some use the co.uk site?

I ask because every now and again I receive a notification of a topic on the co.uk site rather than the .com one. It asks me to login, so I just change the co.uk to .com in the address window and away I go.

Just odd that's all.

Why did they bother with .co.uk?

Wouldn't it have been better to type .uk?

I try to avoid .co stuff It's just extra typing....

.com .org etc is good enough for me.

I assume they wanted to ensure no one else got the co.uk, but I agree .com is easier to type.

Everything is re-directed to the .com URL anyway, just annoying to get the odd .co.uk ref. Perhaps it's when the .com gets overloaded?

I wasn't referring to the autoshite website. I just dont see the point of the .co in general - there's probably some logic to it that I'm overlooking that more net savvy folks deemed it necessary.

They ran out of domains?

They need to identify where the company is based?

Some of the smaller ones are "mis-used" anyway a friend has a .st address as he lives in a street :) and a .cc one, as like you said, it is easier to mistype a longer domain extension.

All .uk domains are administered by NominetUK, and it is them who prevent you from registering autoshite.uk. It appears to be some attempt to tidy web addresses into categories, eg: .co.uk (commercial) .ac.uk (academic) .org.uk (non profit organisations) .gov.uk (government), .ltd.uk (limited companies) etc although only a few are actually restricted to their intended use. There are a handful of sites who registered .uk names before Nominet was founded, like the British Library (www.bl.uk) and the NHS (www.nhs.uk).

The UK was also allocated .gb, although it quickly fell out of favour and it's no longer possible to register a .gb address.
