When did rear fog light legislation start?

My U11 pillarless Bluebird failed its first MOT attempt today -mainly on trivial stuff.

However- one issue was -'No rear fog light'. By that I mean -nothing -no light, no switch, nada...

So -how can it fail something that seemingly has never been fitted. Tester says Regs require a rear fog for a First Uk registered August 1990 car- however, date of manufacture is 1987 (on DVLA's vehicle enquiry form). Dont know what the V5c says -not seen it yet.

So - when did fog light legislation first apply? Does date of manufacture (87) precede date of registration (90)? In essence, do I have to find & fit one retrospectively, or can I explain, nicely, to him why it doesnt need one?

Ta muchly.

Information

Method of Inspection

Reason for Rejection

This inspection applies to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980.

Note: A rear fog lamp is permitted to operate independently of headlamp, position lamp or ignition systems.

Has it always been UK registered, or is it an import. If it's an import, you'll probably have to get one fitted, if not, the testing station have cocked it up.

Import. I'll fit one, natch -but I can't understand how its got a shed load of old MOT certificates from differing stations, over the years- when its clear there's never been one fitted.

I don't know if my garage overlooked it by accident but when I first had my Renault 14 mot'd they did not mention the fog lamp! The car was registered in France in May 1980!

You haven't the foggiest, Nigel ? everytime I get the 1983 Fiat 900e camper mot'd, the tester checks that the rear fog light functions,

it's one of the problems I often get with all the rear light connections after its winter hibernation .

I believe the requirement date is 1980 on......

The Sera had an aftermarket fog light fitted for the same reason.

Bit newer I know.

OK. Seems like its got a load of suspect prior MOT's although I cant see why -its solid underneath

No worries -I'll fix it.

Anyone know what /where the switch goes/ went -on an 87 Bluebird? I'll try an amend one of the blanks -rather than cobble some nasty old aftermarket shite under the dash

Nige - it's a GR8 opportunity to try and find an 80's spec aftermarket HALFRAUDZ fog light - a really cheap and nasty one whichcan be attached to the bottom of the rear bumper at an angle of 5 degrees to starboard and trail some bodged wires through the cabin to a switch nicked off a Maxi!

give it that 'authentic real world feel'

from what I remember I think they sit on the dash to the left of the wheel just behind the wiper stalk and on the black plastic panel below the instruments...there will be a few blanks the size of a postage stamp. Nissan shared many switches across the range and you may be able to source an oem one 2nd hand

I remember late 1979 as it was the year most makers started changing rear lights to incorporate them. Cortina Mk4 to Mk5, Alpines etc all changed so 1980 must have been the year they became compulsory.

The T2 failed on fog light the last two years.

It was constructed in '79, but not registered until after April '80.

I protested that it had reached 29 yrs old without ever needing one or even having a switch.

but tester insisted so I fitted one.

Following year, failed test again, looked like the tester had knocked it on something,

twas fucked & I replaced it

Complete bollocks from an otherwise pleasant enough bloke.

It's definitely 1979. I think it's made after April or first used after September or something like that, basically if it's V reg or newer it should have one.
