from the first picture it looks like a chav but in the second pic it doesn't look like he's wearing white trainers so I'm not sure what it is.

It's a Sunbeam Series Alpine. Similar to this one in Get Carter :)

He’s also got a hooded top, but since it’s down I suppose branding him a hoodie would be a little unfair too.

Yep, Sunbeam Alpine, they did a 'Tiger' version with a V8 engine I believe. Nice car, something I'd like.

Aha! Alpine is at Chichester railway station unless I am mistaken! An unmolested XR4i is now a sight to behold, most have been needlessly Barried with Cossie alloys and front grilles, a damn shame.

You're not. Do you frequent this area? When the barracks closed in Dec 05 & my job moved to Hampshire it was the first time in 9yrs I hadn't either worked or attempted education in Chichester!

I love those Alpines, and the Tiger with a 7litre (I think) Ford V8 is very high on my lust-list!! Can anyone explain to me WHY they didn't outsell both the triumph Spitfire or the MGB? And why they aren't more popular than either of them now? Surely a much better looking car than either of them?

4.7 small block. 7.0 would have made turkey twizzlers out of the half shafts I think.
