Autoshite Pool Cars

The car is still alive and well, albeit in the hand of a more extreme modifier, but mechanically and structurally it is one of the best around. If anyone were to own it they would simply need to add standard springs and it would be a perfect Lada.

As another Lada Owner I take my hat off to you for the repair of the wings and the other jobs. The respray's great, too! The lowering won't be to everyone's tastes, but that's not the point; what you have is a truly useable classic car, with a decent amount of power, that can be used as an every-day car, too!

I salute you!

If you can't be tolerant of all tastes, I suggest you piss off to Practical Classics and polish your imperial nuts with all the other purists.

Now Now  I like a few modified cars dont get me wrong and your mods are reversable and the Lada survives which is great. Its the whole cutting springs thing which in my mind is dangerous. Accessories manufacturers go to a lot of trouble / research to make their springs safe and strong. But doing you own and running a car on the bump stops with "homemade" springs seems so wrong. We will have to agree to disagree - and lets carry on in a friendly way as its a friendly forum :D

Get a thread going on the Micra and post up some pics of you old Mazda estate with the story behind it please.

I applaud Alan for one of the best responses to a 'heckle' I've seen in a long time. Great to see how much work has been done to it and some amazing photos from Prescott.

However, pleasing to see a rather more positive and well explained post from Len in response. I must side with Len slightly (if not the slightly OTT initial sentiment) because I'm no fan of chopping springs either. However, that's based entirely in opinion with no science to back it up at all - just a personal feeling. In conclusion, I'm glad this 'spat' has sorted itself out nicely!

Thanks Ian but I must point out I am not Len.

Thanks for your response, from your initial comments it seemed like you were an unreasonable person. I understand how cutting springs makes some people nervous, but I can assure you that any I have done have been as sympathetic with the car's original design as possible. Like you say, agree to disagree. Just please don't generalize and make wild accusations. I'm not one of the OMG RATLUK CHOPD SLAMMD INNIT brigade. I have professional help and guidance from hot rod builders and drag racing car builders and do nothing without consulting them.

Let's get back to the original thread eh? I promise I won't chop the Micra's springs, if that appeases people.

it occurs to me that 4 out of my 5 road worthy cars are ex autoshite owners or sourced from them 8) now I must go and do some welding...

The Ex-Sporty-Shite / Scooters Mk1 Golf Clipper Cabriolet is sitting festering in its own eco-system of mould up a friends driveway.

A true piece of shit, it's now mechanically fine. Runs well, pretty much rot free, but it'll need a fair old bit of work to make it into a nice car. Someone in the past has utterly fucked the paintwork on it, the front shocks are completely shagged and it's on 13" Golf Mk3 steels. The interior is a bit soggy because it had a new hood fitted a couple of years ago but the front seal wasn't fitted (and someone has attacked the hood with a stanley knife, but this is fixable by any decent trim place).

It actually drives well, provided you avoid potholes or anything the front shocks would have issues with, it goes remarkably well being a 1.8 8v carb job, it's had most of the brakes replaced, new wheel bearings, clutch cable, alternator, radiator, fan belt and a fair few other bits and bobs. The electric hood works as it should.

MOT is out on it, but I think it's taxed until the end of January. It would quite probably pass another MOT, but there are probably a couple of minor jobs to do. The interior mirror refuses to stay attached, for example.

If anyone is interested in it, gimme a shout. It is not my car and I'm unsure how much the current owner wants for it, but she'd like it out of her life and most of her money back. This car convinced the current owner (who previously adored old cars) that old cars aren't worth the hassle and she wandered off and bought a 2007 Audi A6 diesel to replace it. As I recommended she purchased the Golf in the first place I feel I should at least cure her of ownership of the Golf, but I do not wish to own it, or ideally ever set eyes upon it again.

This Golf very nearly made me give up owning old cars. After the umpteenth call out to fix the bloody thing my faith in old cars was severely tested. I had the ebay, pistonheads etc adverts written for my own cars and was in the process of scanning the autotrader for something sensible instead. Luckily Emma buying the A6 has meant I no longer have to fix the fucking Golf on a weekly basis as she no longer uses it. She rarely speaks to me nowadays, and I suspect that is Golf related too.

So, if you want to test your faith in old cars and ruin your relationships with women you've known 20+ years, this may well be the ideal vehicle. I think it works as well as it's going to in its current state, but if you like Mk1 Golfs then it could possibly be made into a nice one. Just get it the fuck away from me. Thank you.

I'll chip in for the small crowd of NI users, or anyone wishing to take a trip over.

1992 Clio RT avec une boîte auto. Bought this on Tuesday. A TWENTY YEAR OLD RENAULT AUTO STILL WORKING!???? YES!! Only just! Slippy in first and second but third and fourth are rock solid. Going to service the gearbox soon.

A friend of mine has a dead Clio Baccara. Those horrid wheels will be replaced with the nice ones off the Baccy. Was toying with the idea of putting the leather in it, but the interior is great in this car, and less of a bite on your arse on these mornings.

6 months tax and test, purchased to ease the abuse on the Meg and Avi over the winter.

Not sure when I'll sell it but it's here as a back up if any shiter in the area needs to borrow it rent free! Just add fuel! :D
