Not another SORN question!!

Just a quick question, if I may?!

My Maxi which I have just aquired was last on the road in December 1997 therefore is is showing as unlicenced on the DVLA database. As the new keeper would I need to declare it SORN or will it be okay as it is?

I seem to recall that's only if it remains with the original keeper - if you register it in your name, you must also apply for a SORN too.

Okay thanks, I realise that anything before 98 does not need to be sorned but I wasn't sure if the change of keeper would alert the troops at the DVLA!!

It seems the revel in dishing out SORN fines even though the whole system seems to be badly thought out and managed to me!

Frankly they dont know what they're doing.

I've an old car, last registered 72 that they insist MUST be SORN'd (-and has been) & another, last registered 96, that CANT be Sorn'd -to the extent that they even returned the paper one I sent in.

Luck of the draw -i reckon.

As I understand it, as the new keeper of the vehicle, you do need to SORN it. Not SORNing that was left untaxed before 1998 only applies to the same keeper of the vehicle who left it untaxed since before 1998.

SORN does not transfer from keeper to keeper. Any new keepers of a vehicle must re-SORN the vehicle. I had to when I first bought my G-reg Sterling, it was already on a SORN when I bought it but as the new keeper I had to re-SORN it.

I disagree - You can't SORN a car that was off the road pre 98, even if it changes keeper. The new keeper/new SORN thing only applies if the car is already SORNed. The online system won't let you declare, and as Mr Bickle noted, if you send one in for this, they will send it back.

Yes, it's a right ol' confusing mess. My understanding was also that a non-SORN car (due to age) is out of the system, so you don't need to declare SORN when you take it on but as has been seen, that ain't necessarily so...

I'd do nowt personally.

Never say never! :)

You can, but they don't always accept it.
