About 12 or 13 years ago I was out with a pal of mine on the bikes in Hong Kong and we stopped off at some blokes apartment in Sham Tseng.

This guy was at the high end of the Audiophile market....his speaker wires cost £20,000 allegedly.....

I was more than impressed with my JVC Micro Stereo that was around £250 at the time

I suddenly feel very inferior having read this thread. But at least in the 80s I had a pair of tweeters at the bottom of the A-posts well before the posh car sound engineers got in on the act...

Old Trio amp (second hand shop), pair of AcousticResearch speakers (freecycle).

Back in the nineties I worked as a Test Engineer for BSS Audio, I tested the EPC760 and EPC780 amplifiers :-

They where used by Britannia Row at most major concert venues, they where very transparent with totally flat frequency response...made good home listening amps too but a little loud at 1.5Kw per channel.

I built a Maplin Millennium valve amp in the 90's. It used to get through power transformers but I put in an uprated one recently and it's been sterling.

25W per channel and it will slay my 100W MOSFET amp.

Have some x-rays. I tell my visitors not to get too close and they often take a step back :D

I'd love a valve amp, but wouldn't be patient enough to keep it warm. And I'm potless, anyway.

I spend any spare cash I had on HiFi when I was at looniversity, when I should have been spending it on beer and tabs. Of both sorts. My current system involves:

Talk Electronics Cyclone Amplifier: (essentially a prototype unit bought via "a mate". Nice 'n basic, no tone controls, no balance, nuffink)

Mission 774E Floor-Standing Lautsprechers: (you'll probably all go  at that but they just happen to gel in the system unfeasibly well)

Cyrus DAD1.5II CD Player: (Currently needing a new transport mech; will be fixed eventually)

Playstation 3: (A/V source, does a good job of HD, actually. And sounds suprisingly OK when I run it through my:....)

Beresford DAC : (Bought this as a total experiment, and, you know, it's great. For £100 I had nothing to lose, but you can feed it with absolute crap and it pisses out half decent results at the other end! It even makes a half decent headphone amp (my amp has no 'phones socket))

Acoustic Solutions :shock: DAB tuner: (Again, I needed DAB and this was cheap, with a decent chipset. It sounds pretty cack wired direct, but feed the digital out into the DAC and, again, it's great!)

1980 Sharp Optonica direct drive full auto turntable with Project tonearm : (Bit of a mongrel, but very heavy and I like it a lot).

Not a pretty system, and probably an audiofile nightmare, but beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

If anybody has a '78 to '80 Hitachi Dynaharmony amplifier or Hitach power assisted cassette deck, I'll pay £££. (like upwards of £3)

I'd like to thank P4Mick for signing up especially to drag up an old, off-topic thread. Cheers!

Well, we have shite buses, shite trains, why not shite Hi-Fi? Who's got some Realistic or 70s Alba?

That said, yeah. Poor form, P4Mick. :x

well poor form indead RoadworkUK, but will my form be improved by the admission that I started out with a BSR Monarch turntable complete with a plastic tone arm, or a Garrard SL65B, or an ADC direct drive turntable till I realised a teanage dream and bought not one but two Pioneer PL12D's and a Thorens TD150? Please tell me I have better form nowadays? oh please?

I dropped some old engine oil off at the local tip and saw this sitting in the 'recycled appliances' container:

Panasonic RX-C45

I stuck it in my car, and have just switched it on and it sounds amazing. I'm so used to 'micro/macro' speakers for use with Ipods etc.

I know it's nothing special, but I thought I'd put it here.
