You too can be Sam Glover for a weekend

Mr Boll put up a link the other day, to the low-priced end of Leboncoin, so I had a look.  Well... I couldn't leave it alone.  His links throughout the ebay tat thread have filled me with dreams of buying some interesting shite from France, Germany or Holland (ish) and driving it home.

I was thinking Opel Rekord or above, 1967-72;

Ford Taunus 26M, early 70s;

post-4559-0-74718300-1387316480_thumb.jpg

Fiat 130 or possibly 132;

post-4559-0-07068500-1387316659_thumb.jpg

if I was really lucky perhaps a Volga.

post-4559-0-23561900-1387316758_thumb.jpg

But touring the cheap end threw up a 1981 Buick Skylark,

post-4559-0-50854200-1387316882_thumb.jpg

which as we all know, would suit me all the way down to my whitewalls.  It would also be an easy cruise back.  LHD over there?  Perfect.  LHD over here?  Done it many times, no problem.  2.8 FWD V6/auto?  Oh yeah, I can certainly live with that.  The Skylark is about the size of an Opel Rekord, conveniently...

The only stumbling block is the cash; I haven't got any.  But ok, you have to have a dream and as dreams go, I reckon this is one of the more achievable ones.  You'd want to double the price of the car to cover your flight, ferry, petrol and possibly hotels, but I do think it would be a fun trip.  Not nearly as adventurous as the stuff Sam does, for sure, but good enough to make an entertaining collection thread on here, I should think!

I'd like to think I'm not the only Shiter harbouring these thoughts.  Anyone in a position to do such things?  Anyone prepared to act on them?  It's not like you're going to be short of encouragement, we'll all talk you into it!

Wrong year of Opel. That's a 72 onwards.

I have major want for an 130/132 fiat, unfortunately i lack funds, and space, and a passport......and i have panic attacks if i go to unfamiliar places.

Aside from that i'm good to go :-D

Seriously though this is something i'd love to be able to do, but can't for the above reasons. (panic attacks mainly)

Since Mister Ballsack posted that link, it has been a hot topic among my chod fancing chums as well. Romantic notions of running out there in the wagon and bringing a H van back to ca$h in on George Clarke's telly programme, or a nice 404 for the summer. Alas it's Crimbo week and I've been told my broken shite needs mending first.

If the car was going for free and had enough fuel in it to get home and I could get the time off work I'd be well up for this.

I think about doing this all the time.  The eBay Tat Thread is a BAD PLACE but I keep going there.

I wonder how many they broke going down that hillside?

WTC, absolutely right and I humbly apogolise for my basic error there :oops: .  Still, a 72-75 would be a perfectly acceptable option, I think.

Spending lots of time on there, plotting, planning, dreaming. I can see something happening before too long...

Mr B, you are a bad influence! :-D   On Subito I just found a lovely navy blue 132...

Are you a serpent in your other life?

...And now Portugal has thrown up a scabby 1958 Opel Kapitan..... this could get seriously expensive, seriously fast!

Posted

Oooh.... in Belgium... 1974 Opel Admiral.  I really shouldn't look at this stuff, should I?

Can I be Nick Larkin for a weekend instead? I quite fancy spending 48 hours prattling on about buses and classic banger racers whilst doing a passable impersonation of John Inman.

The only way to go on Leboncoin (or whatever it's called) is to just pull as many (cheap) Mk1 and 2 Escorts home as you can, plus any cheap VW campers and some 3 door Novas.

The temptation to go over there and buy a load of VW shizzle to punt onto scenesters on RR is so tempting but I would feel guilty knowing what I'm condemning the car to, a bit like buying up old horses to export to France knowing that there's a 99% chance that they're going to end up part of someone's lunch.

The problem with Leboncoin is for all it's array of excellent horn inducing shite, 99% of these motors are too dear to make any financial sense. Of the remaining 1%, 75% are too far south to make it 'easy'. So it's holding out for the 'convenient' well priced chod that some disgruntled ex-collaborator agrees to sell to some pointy, loudly speaking, Rover driving, Roast Beef wanker. Still, worth looking into.

WTC;

You could also 'star' in an episode of Wheeler Dealers' (Before Edd China joined the cast) and suavely NOT buy an Orchid coloured Farina off a lady Forensic Scientist whilst test driving it extensively and making a derisory offer because it didn't have its original reg no

(In the style of Danny la Rue)

Yeah WTC, agreed.  My original idea was to buy something for me to enjoy, which remains the driving emotion.  Going over to make loads of money means buying shit I wouldn't want to drive.  FTRO.

I've looked into importing RWD Escorts from South Africa as I have a friend who goes there regularly and punting them out over here. The problem is that the one person who seems to do it seems to do something similar is having to price them at £8000 and doesn't seem to be shifting many, he doesn't even register them in the UK and I'm not 100% certain he has paid the import duty.

2cv vans are worth bringing over. I sold the acadiane I brought back straight away for double what I paid for it. I always use a trailer though as it works out cheaper if I am driving over anyway. Plus most of the shite I buy wouldn't drive back anyway. There are also a few chancers in france the 504 coupe I went to Lyon for was supposed to drive ok, when I got there the track rod arm was so bent I could only just get it on the trailer. Not very brave really using a trailer but at least I know I will get there and back

Even if my passport was still valid, I am possibly at risk of getting nicked in France. Am too chicken to test the theory. A eurotat purchasing adventure sounds tres cool though. SG just lives the dream!

I accept that there are cars you could bring back that would be "worthwhile" assuming you fetched them from within the EU (no duty).  However, these are, almost without exception, cars that I would deliberately and specifically avoid driving, or heaven forbid, actually owning!  I would have to make this a cash-negative enterprise by bringing in the kind of car I like: a big comfy automatic barge with soft seats and - gasp! - four doors.  I seem to be the only person on the internet who would drive such a thing, so profit was never in the plan at all.

We should of switched to driving on the right back in the late 1950s when we had a chance.
