Renault Master fault

Hi all,

I sold the Renault Master T35D on Friday, and the new owner has been in touch with it loosing power. I did state when I sold it that it was strictly 'SOLD AS SEEN, NO WARRANTY GIVEN OR IMPLIED' so they don't really have a leg to stand on, coupled with the fact that they refused a test drive when they came to look at it.

I went and had a look at it, and it seems to be getting air into the fuel system, it's had a new filter casing, but the primer/bleed button has no pressure so I assume that it's not pumping fuel correctly. Does anyone know if they have a lift pump, from the tank to the filter. Basically it runs like it's running out of diesel, smoking and with no power, but it will idle happily and occasionally get some fuel through. It has been running fine for the last 200 miles, and only started with the fault since they have taken ownership. I've half a mind to tell them to stick it, given the terms above, but I'm a nice guy and if it's something simple, be happy to fix it for them. any ideas??

...any ideas??

Certainly.

"I did state when I sold it that it was strictly 'SOLD AS SEEN, NO WARRANTY GIVEN OR IMPLIED' so they don't really have a leg to stand on..."

End of. Offering to fix it could be taken to suggest the fault was known and will bring grief, because other people may not be as reasonable as you seem to be.

Yeh, I agree, just feel sorry for them I guess, although I haven't admited any liability, as the fault was not apparent over the last two weeks that it's been on the road. Will see what they say.

If I was fixing it I would start be replacing the hose from the filter to the injection pump with clear pipe so that I could see if there are any bubbles in there.

Also I would check all the leak off pipes; these are the small rubber pipes that daisy chain between injectors and go back to the pump. They often split on old diesels and cause air ingress, also very cheap and easy to change.

I found myself in a similar situation after selling my Espace V6. I put the car on ebay, a real honest description, listing all the bad faults. Before the auction finished a guy came to view, took it on a test drive, gave it a good going over. He ended up buying the car. I got an angry phone call about two weeks later saying the automatic gearbox had given up and that I "must have known something was wrong". Eh, no! That's the risk you take when you buy an automatic Renner! I politely told him it wasn't my problem, he'd had the car for two weeks and that something like that cannot be anticipated.

It really isn't your problem at all. Yes, it would be easier to wash your hands of it if the guy was an ignorant fuck, but I think - as mentioned already - getting involved will raise suspicions of you already knowing about it. It's the risk they took by not buying from a dealer. Caveat Emptor.

It could well be the pump button causing the air........it has no function other than priming as the injector pump will draw fuel. They are known to be unreliable....even for a renault.

Given that it was sold as seen though you can just tell them to bog off

send them a link to this thread, they can use the advice here themselves. :D

There is a clear pipe to the pump, with loads of bubbles in, would appear that fuel is struggling to get through. the primer pump/housing is new, but there is no pressure on the button when you try and prime it. Very weird.

There is a common problem here

And thats the problem as Renault (and Fiat come to that) Could not build a faultless and quality product to save their lives. How these companies have never gone bankrupt has me foxed :? Tell them to jog on it was sold as seen so accept the problem.

This is gonna sound a little patronising here, but you did ask them if there was diesel in the tank, did you not?

The diaghram split inside the plunger on one of my old pugs years ago. It pegged out on the A40M Paddington flyover and involved a wait for the AA.

The AA towed it to a local garage.

The garage put cling film over the top of the plunger and housing and an elastic band over that. This stopped air getting into the assembly and got me home. I thought that was a clever trick.

Yep, I did, and also asked to see the receipt for the fuel they had put in to prove they hadn't misfueled it.

If no pressure on the button try undoing the pipe (or tell them to!!) from the tank at the filter head and blowing down it. This will remove any crap at the pick up pipe - especially if there is a gauze. I did this on a pug engined sherpa that couldn't exceed 40mph and it restored the top speed(to 49!).Obviously the blockage is likely to re occurr sometime in the next few years. Other than that it is just down to checking the pipe and fittings.
