2003 Mondeo tdi auto, 238 k miles. Occasional strange burning smell [but no noise] and charging light occasionally comes on, although alternator is charging fine. Suspect alternator bearing? [strange there's no squealing noise though] Any ideas chaps?

If there is no squealing from the bearings I think it could be the voltage regulator on the alternator. Or with the burning smell a poss wiring issue?

An old work colleague of mine bought a 2001 Mondeo Ghia 2.0TDdi (Manual) from the company and that had an issue with the charging light being almost constantly on. He didn't have any strange burning smells though - not that he said anyway. Changing the alternator didn't do anything and it turned out to be a fault in the Bridging Loom after about four trips to various garages to diagnose it.

This may not be the problem you have, but it's worth checking incase it’s that which is burning / has burnt out.

If you are smelling it stronger in the car than under the bonnet could it be a switch etc over heating, I had the same sort of thing on a Transit, it was the light switch after the lights had been on for about twenty minutes.
