Aside: Back in the 1980s, Toleman used to operate from a car storage yard not far from where I grew up at Port Richborough in Kent, which mainly dealt with Peugeots and Talbots. I recall that at the time, most of the car transporters they used were DAF, Magirus-Deutz, Volvo and MAN in origin. One of the M-D units was involved in a fatal collision with a mark 3 Escort in Cliffsend in 1985 or so.

Oh yes! I was only a nipper but these things were AMAZING! Weren't they even featured on the news?

 

I still look at them today wondering how many cars get damaged by sudden bumps. The clearances seem very minimal! Seem to recall that one full of BMWs fell over on a motorway at some point in the late 1980s/early 1990s as well.

Yes, that's them. They even provided Ayrton Senna with his first F1 steed (test sessions with other teams aside). What is now the current Renault F1 team was once Toleman (being named Benetton in the meantime).

 

Not bad for a trucking firm, eh?

my old man used to drive one (when he drove a mk1 chavalier)

 

autocarriers had some trailers that could carry 13, but i dont think the idea took off, as some of the bottom row had to be very small cars.

Amazing bit of kit these, love the way they exploited the loopholes to get the legal. Does look tight as arseholes mind.
