Rover 75 - Discuss

I quite like the look of these, I've driven a diesel engined example over considerable distance some years back and found it a decent motor, I don't think a petrol engined model is worth risking though!

I had a 2.0 V6 a few years ago, and it was a lovely car, although not great on juice (automatics and hills don't equal economy).

I would have another petrol if it was cheap enough, the V6s are much better than the 1.8 for HGF. The 2.0 V6 dosen't really offer much economy over the 2.5. Check that the cambelts (three of them  on a V6) have been done. CDTs are the best bet although they can be a bit sluggish at times (there are upgades you can do to solve this).

It has to have leather for the full on mini Bentley experience though. MG ZTs seem to cheaper than Rovers for some reason, perhaps because they don't appeal to old giffers and the potential market is reduced. Connoisseur SE is the top of the range, Club or Classic (I forget which) the basic one. The quality of the parts got worse as the years went on. Personally I wouldn't have a facelift Rover, the front is hideous and the bonnet dosen't line up well with the grille/bumper assembly at all (dealers were responsible for the final lining up of the front clip and the wings/bonnet  ). Facelift MGs look OK.

I think there will always be a following for these for various reasons, just as some people still like Rover P4s.

My boss has bought two 75s this week - a blue 52-plate 2.0 diesel estate, and a silver 2.0 diesel saloon. Both have issues, but he wants a second example as a spare as his wife drives a 51-plate 2.0 diesel estate.

He describes himself as "a masochist with a Rover fetish" which would tie up with the total fleet, six R8 200/400-series and the trio of 75s... he swears by them in fairness, and he's a professional Yorkshireman.

Think the 323 was a 1.8 V6, same as the Mazda MX-3.

The 323F V6 was a 2 litre, they were fantastic, I had one at 21 and thought i was DA KING!

I'll throw another vote in for the ZT260 - yum :)

Following similar advice from this forum my youngest daughter bought an 75 Connoisseur CDT SE (W-reg) and is delighted with it.

We swapped cars a few weeks ago as she wanted my C5 estate to move to a new flat.

I was rather reluctant to swap back again. I was also rather peeved to find that the suspension in the Rover was better than the C5 around town.

It is, as has been mentioned, somewhat sluggish compared to the C5 and her previous SAAB 900 2.3 but thats an apples and oranges comparison.

It is certainly a very pleasant and refined place to be, even her brothers and sisters who take the mick out of her for driving a giffermobile bow to that one.

40mpg knocking around the doors puts a smile on her face too.

I've always like the 75.

Only ever driven a 1.8 for a day - largely on motorways - where it was singularly uninspiring and just felt too feeble. Some time after that I was a passenger in a 2.0D saloon with a lovely spec (silver paintwork, black interior and black leather seats with cream piping) and it just felt ace. That journey was a particularly serene experience.

I too like the 75, however they are not without fault. Imho

They have on the derv if i am right 2 fuel pumps, one which is a bastard to replace, and quite expensive too. One is in the tank, i can't remember where the other one is. They also have the dual mass flywheel which is another new style item fitted to modern derv cars which (again imho) is of very little benefit to the owner. The clutch slave cylinder is inside the gearbox casing and at around 10 years old they let go, the thing leaks and engaging gears becomes pretty much impossible. The clutch can. at a specialist cost around £800 i think. A mate of mrs ohv had one, she had the clutch replaced at a really good price (i.e. it was too cheap even though she took it to a "clutch centre") and then a month later got the slave cyl done. It was a nightmare for her, about two weeks later her fuel pump went and she bought a secondand one. She also had a problem with the front coilspring or the coilspring seat i can't remeber which, that was pointed out at an mot a couple of years ago and fixed.

I think a local specialist finished up sorting it out for her, one which i recommended.

Still, they are a great comfy car and ooze class can't be any worse than anything else at similar money.

Coiuld do a lot worse i would imagine......thinks anything French, Italian and quite probably German too for the money.

That's the same as any other common rail diesel, there's a low pressure pump at the tank and a high pressure pump at the engine.

They should have fitted the L-series.

I'm undecided about Rover 75s, think I prefer the 'Rondas' - they have a lot less to go wrong.

I just realised, I can't remember when I last saw a Rover 600. The 620 diesel should be quite good but I've never been in one.

If the Rondas are the 400/45 diesel then i would agree, i now have a 45 diesel.

The 600 is great in either petrol or diseasal and so reasonably priced too!

In my eyes the 75 is pig ugly. The faux retro styling doesn't work. But I suppose on this forum the uglier the better.

Pig ugly? Not to your taste, maybe, but surely pig ugly's a bit harsh...
