Buying a vehicle with SORN fines outstanding

On saturday morning I plan to drive my fairly reliable, fast, clean and tidy MK2 golf gti from Rotherham to some (probably) shady dockside industrial unit in liverpool. When I get there, I'll give a man my nice car and some money, then do my best to drive back home in an old VW t25 panel van.

This van supposedly has 11 months MOT, but it doesn't show as being taxed since 2007. And it's just down as "unlicenced" so I guess there are a few sorn fines waiting for someone? Who will end up copping for these?

The reg plate works on the DVLA site, but on the £3 mycarcheck thing it comes up as "no record". Anyone know any other cheap sites I can verify the reg number and get a vin number out of it?

SiVDUBGTi by any chance?

I'm damned sure if you tax it (as the new owner) before you leave then any previous SORN/not SORN malarkey will be the responsibility of the previous owner/s and DVLA.

Is this the one on RR? Looks OK - was thinking of a van myself.

Thats the one!

It's getting driven home on my mates trade plates and insurance, that's the plan anyway. (I need to convert it to a "camper" before I can insure it  )

With my luck I'll be waiting for the AA about 250 yards from the unit, with a big trail of oil, pistons and crankcase.

This is true. I've known vehicles bought like that bought in the past. Like the SORN crap, as a new owner it on you tax or SORN it from when its registered to you. Any previous unlicencing issues is down to its previous owners who owned it during the time it wasnt licenced or SORNed. Just as it is when its ona SORN, if you buy a vehicle thats been SORNed, when its registered to you, you have to re-SORN it.

my 604 was on SORN when I bought it but it clearly says that the SORN is not transferable to a new owner. On the SORN form there is a tick box to say that you haven't got the V5 yet so you just tick that and post it to the DVLA. It all went through okay for me.

That's a weight off the mind - I was fairly sure I'd be OK.

It got us home! It' got a sill full of expanding foam, the passenger front wheel was on with 3 bolts (the other two were bouncing round in the hubcap) and it's got about half of it's claimed 112bhp, but overall it ended up a bit less bad than I was expecting.

Nice looking van, I think these better/meaner with the square headlights than round. Is that your garage? Looks epic, I'd love a garage that I could actually walk around without having to squeeze past any objects/walls
