Brand New Polo Match Side Lights....

Sorry not a shite related question but a more modern one...

Friends just bought a brand new VW Polo Match and according to VW it's now European Law that new cars must run with side lights on constantly ala ovlov

Now in the manual it does state you can turnt his off but we've all tried a few times and it doesn't work.

So I guess

1. is this true that it's now European Law

2. is there any way we can override the sidelights as the manual explanation doesn't seem to work.

I think you'll have to pop to the dealer to kill 'em. Most of the Skodas in work have DRLs but occasionally we'll get a new one where they're not switched on.

It is law in a few Yoo Rope Ian countries to run with headlamps on all the time now.

With the exception of a couple of places, the law isn't exactly like that. There IS a European law that requires always-on sidelights, but it only concerns new models submitted for type approval after a set date in early 2011, so it's unlikely to have impacted more than a handful of models at present. However, there's nothing stopping the manufacturers from doing it sooner, and that's probably what they'll do because economies of scale mean that full implementation will work out 7p cheaper per car.

As to the technical side of how to switch the bloody things off, I have no clue (now that's a surprise).

Czech Republic you must drive with headlights on at all times. Doesn't matter what you're driving, if it's got headlamps they must be on.

That mandatory lights on thing looks like a good idea at first glance, but I'm thinking it would lead to our less able motorists growing blind to anything without big bright lights, pedestrians and cyclists become invisible to them even if they bother looking. That's why we must fight the EEC nazis.

I work for a VW dealer and the official line from VWuk is that we are not allowed to turn then off as the cars have been type approved (europe again!) to have them - we get loads of requests to do this!

There is apparently a couple of ways of turning them off (removing one wire from the headlamp switch is one I have heard of) but we always tell people that if they are turned off then effectively they have "modified" their car and will probably make their insurance policy null and void!

You could turn the DRLs off on VWs through the dash computer but they removed the ability sometime last year if I have my facts straight.

Also fuck DRLs, but I'm planning on fitting some to my car just to stand out when everyone's got them.

Insert key in ignition, but don't turn it. Turn the headlight switch to the "0" position. Move the indicator stalk to the left position and pull towards you, as though you were flashing a warning at another car. Turn the ignition on, but not the engine. Wait at least four seconds and you should hear three bleeps to indicate that the DRLs have been deactivated.

(although this is from Honest John.....)
