A mate has an M plate Astra 1.6 16v with a years MOT and tax till end september.

I quote:

Selling for spares or repair. Its had a few new bits including exhaust. Just cant be bothered with it anymore. It has a problem when on tickover - it will rev up on its own to the redline. Have replaced the idle control valve. Didn't fix it so cant be bothered. £300 ono

 

I bought a mk3 Astra estate from him about 4 years ago and it was a brilliant old thing despite its 228k miles.

'M' plate seems a bit early for the 16V lump, but assuming it is it could be a throttle body or something daft like a sticky throttle cable.

Sport 1.6 were on a M iirc correctly ? X16XEL ?

Nothing electrical would cause the engine to redline, the throttle cable or throttle butterfly will be sticking. Unless the throttle position sensor has had it!

I think Cavette may be right about it being a little early for a 16v engine, looking at those wheels!

Look like mingebag trims but to be fair it does seem to say '16V' on the boot. Good vfm whatever engine it is though.

I've had a 1.8 16v Astra sport on an M reg, it had management issues too often putting the MIL light on & occasionally not wanting to start but went well otherwise & not bad on juice either.

I agree about the electrics not being able to make it rev like that, then engine needs air to rev up & the idle control valve just wont flow enough to make it rev hard.
