V5 question - Scrapping your own vehicles

As most of you wil know there's no longer a little box on the V5 you can tick to say you've broken something up yourself. I'm sure I won't be the only person on here who does this, so how do you get around it?

I've got a couple of scooters already that I've broken up for parts that are little more than frames now, yet if I can't convince DVLA they're scrap I'll be filling in SORN declarations on them indefinitely. One suggestion I've had so far is to grind the frame numbers off and leave them at the end of the drive, wait for the pikeys to do their thing then leave it a few weeks and report them stolen.

Just put a spurious name and address for the new 'buyer' and send it off as sold, and watch the problem disappear off in the DVLA's general direction.

SOC's suggestion, which is a good one, is to put Simon Whatnot (DVLA head honcho) as the new keeper.

Dunno if this applies outside Northern Ireland, but there is a provision for "Vehicles Scrapped or Permanently Exported":

"If you actually break up the vehicle yourself, then return this document (V5C) to DVLNI* Headquarters with a letter explaining what you have done"

It goes on to explain what to do if you give the vehicle to a breaker etc.

*DVLNI is the DVLA in Northern Ireland.

Take the frames to a scrapyard, weigh them in and get them to send the docs off.

Ring them up, be nice and explain the situation. Say you bought them with V5s but you're an upstanding member of society and you want to set the record straight. They'll ask you to write to them and then you'll get the acknowledgement through a week or so later.

I found a proper Doovla switchboard number by extensive googling which speeded the process up no end. The number they give you (0900, calls terminate in Belize at 9£ per minute or whatever) doesn't work for any serious business in my experience. This process has worked for us a couple of times, most recently with a written off Beetle that was never going back on the road - it was already a pile of parts when it arrived with V5c.

The DVLA twunts deserve to get misinformed in return for their constant meddling with reg docs, perhaps one day the computer will be clogged up with more vehicles that no longer exist than actual ones. I've 'sold' a couple of cars to a Mike Hunt of The Mound, Lady Garden, Clitheroe, LA8 1AS.

I bought a car and scrapped it before the V5 arrived. I sent the V5 back, signed and dated with an accompanying letter explaining that the car had been "reduced to spares and scrapped". A week or so later I got a confirmation that I no longer owned the car. Must have worked then!

Thanks guys, it's worth knowing that talking to them is a reasonable option in this case. In the past I've tried that and had to endure someone parroting back the contents of the letter I was holding in my mitt until I finally surrendered and hung up.

And if that doesn't work, Mr Hunt will have a couple of scooters on his driveway alongside Des's castoffs
