5 days late paying road fund license = fine?

For the first time ever I forgot to renew car tax on my wife's car. It ran out end of June.

The car is parked on the drive just in case.

If I run round to the post office first thing tomorrow and buy a disc is the DVLA database likely to fine me?

that would really suck

No, IIRC you've got 7 days.

But I may be RONG.

I retaxed mine online at 23:57 on the last day of June just to be awkward. I still haven't received the disc from Swansea.

The database won't fine you, 4-5 days late is nothing but watch out for the roaming gangs of clampers... they will!

Just realized I forgot to sorn the chevanne... I have paid out £400 in road tax this month though :(

thanks guys

I wish it could be paid monthly by direct debit, like the TV license

The difference being that the TV licence really is an optional tax (I don't watch TV, but that also applies to those who do)... 8)

Why not pay online? You've got 5 days grace so I'd imagine that you'd be fine until midnight tomorrow night anyway so going to the post office should be fine :)

I really do wish you could just do it by direct debit as was mentioned. Annoyingly when I tried to tax the 500 3 weeks early it would let me, but the tax would run from the start of June rather than the start of July. Of course when I tried to tax it with the reminder it complained that the insurance was going to run out before the tax disc started as the renewal was on the 28th and only on the 30th did the database actually update which was pretty annoying. Can't complain @ £30 for a whole years tax though :D Wifes car is over £200

ooh ooh I know that one :D

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

Oops! Didn't mean to give out shoddy information. Sorry! Post office it is then!

I've bought my tax almost 4 weeks late before, but nothing happened.

Ive been late loads of times, you are back rated to your last expiry so they get their money either way

You get a tax disc extra reminder about two weeks after your reminder now too

Is this even legal? Could I turn up with my traders policy and enough money for the tax and drive it away?

Apart from the fact that most trade policies have a specific clause that says "Not to be used for releasing cars from pounds" or something along those lines. I think it's ok if it's your car and has been for a while, but you can't turn up and get cars released with a lot of them. My old Tradex policy had the clause, and my current Aviva one does as well.

Probably down to the Scallies releasing anything that moved using the "Just bought it" excuse. Which no longer works.

To get that Pug out I suspect you'd have to insure it with a regular policy.

^^ I doubt it, I think there is a specific exclusion saying you can't use a trade cert to get a car out of pound unless it was your car before they siezed it (ie named on v5...)

What will happen to it? Will it be auctioned off or fragged?

Posted

The scrapyard opposite me gets unclaimed cars from the police pound. They wipe them off the dvla record with a COD first, which is why the cityrover I spotted had no numberplates. 6-8 weeks in the yard, then crush and frag.

edit to add - you can't buy them back out whole. They are no longer cars at this point, they are waste and you need to be a licenced waste carrier/handler to deal with them.
