604 STi The story unfolds.

The welders are a dab hand at mischevious piss-taking . Upon discovering the o/s/r 1/4 is about an inch deep in filler they sent me this...

EFA*

I know the welders, and I know this is pretty tame for them. They are, however, a top pair of guys!

Leg Ends the pair of 'em. Kromer the cat is probably the most sensible. Good job he's the owner.

It's obvious that the previous keeper had commissioned a bodge-fest when he had the colour changed to red. Probably without complete knowledge of that was going on, and quite possibly expensively, but whoever has been playing with the o/s/r 1/4 was a master bodger to say the least.

This was how the 1/4 in question looked when I bought it. Signs of bodginess but nothing too bad. Just looked like someone had filled the arch and it was bubbling a bit.

A proper "10 yarder" as they say in auction houses.

The best close ups I have of its state when bought are these..

Further you dig, more filler was found. There's the pic from earlier in the thread (and my current avatar)

The original paint can still be seen under the filler...

Along with plenty of rot. This is what bodging does, people. The two tubes that have been plugged up are the sunroof drain tubes. Whoever did that needs a bloody good slap. Extend the fucking tubes until they're clear of the arch, you retards, don't just plug 'em up and slap a load of filler everywhere.

i assume that as the rear wings are kind of flat with no "arches" that they can be repaired with flat sheet and the lip can can be easily hand made?

Looks like it will be a proper cool car once it's done. I can only admire because i can't weld.

Keep up the good work chap, i wish i could do this kind of thing, properly 8)

I think it took G an hour or so to make pretty much all of the rear wing. They're only making a huge repair panel for the arch section but it looks spot on. Funnily enough he had a sod of a time getting the cover sills right as there's a 16mm radius at the top edge and their bending thing is closer to 20mm so they were harder to do than the rear 1/4...

Crikey that's a lot of filler. My SD1's the same it's smothered in the stuff. I recon it's a legacy of bodge up's from when these cars were dailys and the work was done as cheaply as possible rather than properly just to keep them presentable and get them through the mot's etc.

my brown 604 is a bit rusty in the front corners of the sunroof aperture. I am wondering if this allows water into the A pillar rather than (or as well as) the water going down the drain tube.

Is this why 604s all have rotten A pillars as they all seem to have sunroofs?

But why does it show up on the windscreen surround first? that isn't the lowest point so I don't understand why water would stop or collect at the point.

I'm starting to think that once mine has an MOT that the sunroof aperture and drain tubes needs to be the first thing I fix up otherwise any repairs I make lower down are just going to get wet again quite quickly.

What's the sunroof aperture like on yours Pete?

Bizarrely, it's mint. The sunroof works as it should, too.

Once this bit of welding is done the only rot on the thing will be at the bottom left corner of the windscreen and it doesn't look too bad.

Whilst work continues on the o/s/r 1/4 and inner wing.

I cleaned the sills up ready for work then got carried away and started at the little hole in the o/s/f floor pan..

This is how it looked when I bought the car. Just a couple of little plates.

168708_10150092870694644_804084643_5887488_4440045_n.jpg

After a closer look.

321291_10150288898734644_804084643_7496886_6278202_n.jpg

and a bit of fun with the flap wheel.

303156_10150288898549644_804084643_7496883_1984624_n.jpg

Hmm. Why would it be double skinned here? .... ohhhhh fucksticks, it's a bodge plate over rot.

Carpet up...

Bugger. Here we go again.

Oh, had a closer investigation. I must have not been thinking straight the other day. The blocked sunroof tubes are in fact the pneumatic tubes for the fuel flap lock. Which is missing, presumed fucked. Still bodgey blocking 'em up and shoving 'em down the inner wing.

Kudos to you for keeping such a grand old dame on the road; i've always had a soft spot for these and it's Talbot Tagora cousin. Are a lot of components shared under the skin?

I don't know exactly how closely related they are, but I imagine they'd have six fingered kids.

But that may just be a French thing.

Scary how bad things get once you start poking about a bit. I intend not to poke the BX very much. Hopefully the MOT man will show similar restraint...

I have been advised that if the windscreen seal lets water in at the top, but doesn't let it out at the bottom, the water collects behind the seal and rots the A-piller at the bottom of the screen. Seems like a good explanation, but how do you stop it happening?

Well, that little hole in the footwell is a bit larger now...

The o/s/r inner arch is coming along quite nicely though.

This may well be up for sale shortly.... once it's all back together, had some paintwork and an MOT thrown at it.

If anyone's interested in buying probably the most solid 604 in the UK, PM me....

In fact, that counts for all my cars other than the Mk2. I think it's time to flog the lot and buy something else.

Posted

Yes, but it'll be for sale...

Plan is use it for a couple of weeks, enjoy it, then flog it.

In fact, when's the classic car show at the NEC? That's where the 604 thing began, that's where it can end!

It was interesting to bump into you on Thursday and I'm amazed you recognised my car from here. It seems a shame to have so much done to the 604, then sell it. It's almost a new car now! Have you seen something else which is tempting you?

There's always stuff out there tempting me.... :)

what will be your pence per mile ?

Up there in the insanity zone. I've not driven a mile in it yet.

I would love to keep it, but I'd also love to keep the Jag, and the Jeep, and the Mondeo is almost sensible motoring, but there are plans afoot and those plans involve money. Which means they're all going. Apart from the Escort, because that ain't going anywhere at the moment.

Not got a clue, Mr Rustbucket.

I've been mad busy all this week... Going to try and get up there tomorrow. Hopefully work has progressed a bit.

Mr Nutjob, those door trims are pretty much exactly what mine needs. Just a shame I can't justify a 700 mile round trip to get 'em. I'd buy the whole trim if it got me 'em.

O/S/Rear 1/4 and inner arch finally sorted.

Hopefully, I may actually manage to get this thing to the Classic Car show at the NEC next month. Where it'll probably have a FOR SALE sign in the window...

That'd be nice, but it's not getting a full repaint, so it'll look a bit shabby under show lights :(
