Thoughts on occasional steering-related noise

Anyone want to give this a stab in the dark as regards possible causes (preferably without involving crisps and/or insults to AS members)?

Funny how, while the e-ink was still drying on my praise of the Accord's durability etc, it's developed a bit of a new fault. The steering works fine, the PAS system does its job, and so on...but there is a bit of a screeching noise that's causing a fair amount of puzzlement. The interesting thing is that the noise doesn't appear until the car has been driven for a while (let's say a minimum of 30 mins/20 miles), which I really find bizarre- wouldn't you expect grease etc to work BETTER when heated up? It comes from the left side, and is quite pronounced at low speeds- let's say 10-25 mph, fading away after that and disappearing completely by the time you reach 55. It also never appears when the car is stationary. The steering/handling aren't affected in the slightest- I just drove rather spiritedly across the Snakepass and it was spot-on.

What do you reckon it may be?

That time will come, but not before I've totally fucked it up by trying to "fix" various bits for a laff.

Slipping belt?

could be...I was thinking it could be caused by the PS fluid not having been changed for the last three-and-a-half centuries...but would either of these explain why/how it is quiet at higher speeds?

Have you tried changing the fluid? Noise as it warms up is usually fluid/valve related - that may help a little. Less assistance required for lane changing at higher speeds/road noise masking noise?

Adjust the Frictor Valve at idle? *

*Made up. Honest. Hopefully vaguely funier than 'SCRAP ITâ„¢... ish'

Ta for that- I think you're right on the money! I had thought about road noise, but the ride isn't that noisy- 55mph in 5th only corresponds to 2500rpm, so there is no engine noise to speak of, but the obvious fact that the assistance is pared-down at higher speeds had been escaping me! I was going to change the fluid anyway, so let's see if it makes a difference.

What's left on the Honda? (t+t)

How much does it weigh?

Where in the country are you?

Slipping belt?

Make sure all the belts are tensioned properly before anything else - there's no cost involved in doing that.

Keep it simple...
